Congrats on your nummularioides buds! Make sure you post pics when it blooms.

Yes, the growing tips shouldn't be clipped downwards. Other than that, the only tip I have is to make sure you clip (or wrap) the vines on thick/woody hoyas when they are "young"...if you wait too long the vines won't be as bendable and you risk breaking them. Have fun with the trellises, and I'd love to see a pic of what you end up making!

thanks for posting the pic of your numm. How exciting!!! The only one I have forming buds is lacunosa and there are three different peduncles with buds on them.

I think I may have a peduncle on my h. lacunosa (I apparently need stronger reading glasses to identify it correctly!). Mine is the speckled leaf EA variety - anyone have any idea what color the flowers will be? Thought I saw one somewhere online with pink blooms rather than the standard white.

Congrats on your peduncle on your lacunosa, that's exciting. I didn't realize there was a speckled leaf ea lacunosa. My lacunosa is ea but not speckled.

The speckled lacunosa has the same color blooms as the regular lacunosa.

Which is white? I haven't kept one, but remember seeing it in bloom at the store.

My only tip is to be sure not to clip it too tightly (may sound obvious, but if not); too tight can strangle the stem/vine/branch.

If I can't find orchid clips lying around, I use pipe cleaners (ugly, but works) or famously, I use binder clips (black clips used in law firms). I once brought my H. obovata in for Show & Tell & forgot I had 4-5 binders clips attaching the back of the plant to the hoop. When the moderator turned the plant around to show, everyone burst out laughing (but the plant was thriving)!

Note abt Kerrii: this needs to be hooped/trellised when young or the stems get too thick to curve easily, also this one bleeds a lot of white sap when bending, a spray of water at the bends (or cuts) stops the flow.

That's a tough question to answer. For the fast growing larger leaved hoyas, you'd want to use a bigger trellis. But for the average hoya (let's just say H. carnosa), I really don't think it matters too much. If it turns out that you don't have a tall enough trellis (which could happen after a hoya continues to grow), you can always wrap sideways and around....you'll figure out the best way to wrap it and make it fit on the trellis. It also depends on what your taste is and how you want the hoya to look.

Here are some trellis height examples: for my H. schneei (small leaves) I use a 8.5" high trellis (from soil line to top of trellis), for my H. pubicalyx 'Red Buttons' (compact leaf growth, smallish/narrow leaves) I use a 13" high trellis, and for H. motoskei (not as compact, larger leaves) I use a 20" high trellis.

Yeah, in my case resourceful goes hand-in-hand w/ a bit crazy. I prefer medium size binder clips for the bigger, heavier Hoyas, they're sturdy enough to take the weight of thick stemmed, heavy leafed hoyas like Kerri & Obovata. Also, if placed carefully, there's room for a thick stem in the clip w/out causing injury to the stem/branch. I'll use anything that's lying around, I once made a mini wooden trellis from coffee stirrers for a Lacunosa to climb; looked really pretty even tho' I knew over time the bottom of the trellis would rot in the mix (it did).

Oh, I wish I had all that vertical space that Gabi does ...

Trellis height also depends on how much space you've got. I have the bulk of the Hoya collection on the 3 shelves mounted one above the other abt 12-14" apart. So given that, I tend to hoop my sprawling Hoyas: Kerrii, Obovata, Pubicalyx(es). I make hoops from wire coat hangers bent into circles or inverted U-shapes 6-8" round.

I have a Pubicalyx I've wrapped round & round a circular hoop & it's been happy that way for at least 5 yrs. Just in the last few wks it's not looking good & I'm wondering what I'll find if I unhoop & unwind it. I think it's losing its roots & am afraid unless I turn it out, I won't know for sure (not that I'm sure how to cure that, but still ... sigh)

Did dig out a couple of small topiary forms to use for some of the smaller hoya's like loheri. Do have a couple I'm not sure what to do with like cummingiana. Any suggestions?

H. cummingiana has shrubby growth, but I know some vines just get so long that they start to hang over the pot. If it were me I'd just let that one hang, because the growth is so compact and it would be tough to keep on a trellis. But it's totally up to you...depends on how you want it to look.

Ok...just checked out Christina's page (myhoyas.com) - look at her cummingiana on a trellis...looks really cool!

Hey this is a really great thread!!!!!!! i too am going to start a hoya on a trellis! i did not know about pointing them downward at all!!!!!!!!! that could explain why two of my grow tips died!!!!! well one i kinda broke.... Oooppss!!!!! (LOL) well who hasn't done that? I am a subscriber to Logees Greenhouse and they have hoyas and in their magazine they have a hoya trellis on sale that i wanna buy!!!!! its A little over 2 feet tall and i need the space for my Fungii that is starting 3 new vines!!!! I am So pumped. Those ideas really are something else huh? well i thought id pass that along if any one's interested? I plan to pick one up. My hoya is in need of some TLC. its top heavy, i place a rock on the medium to keep it from falling over how lame is that??? hahahah well enough monologing....... im tired. gabro14: The Hoya cummingiana really does look bad! The sad thing is that it looks even worse now that it has grown to twice the size shown in the photo, and still it looks better than when I grew it in a hanging basket... so you can imagine how bad that looked *lol*

Cumingiana is a tough one to know what to do with - the leaves seem too small to really make it "bushy", but yet it's so stiff I fear breaking it if I try to bend it around a trellis. I'm thinking you have to start them when they're really young! Anyone know if this hoya will branch well if the ends are snipped off?

Maimiti, do you have a recent pic of it? It's just such an awkward hoya for a trellis, but I can see that it's also awkward for a hanging basket! I find H. lobbii to be similarly difficult in terms of finding a good way to grow it. Mine is on a trellis now but it's outgrowing it and I can't wrap the vines around the trellis...they are just too stiff. So I might just have to cut them and make a fuller plant (?)

Here's a pic of my lobbii taken last year. It is now on a MUCH taller bamboo trellis since the stems needed more support up top, but it has grown a lot since this picture and the stem on the right is WAY higher than the top of the trellis! What to do, what to do...

Kelly, my cummingiana is still small and bushy, but I'm now starting to wonder what I'll do when it gets bigger. I don't find the stems/vines to be stiff though...I just think it looks awkward on a trellis. I have these little green sticks that I sometimes clip these type of upward growing vines to (instead of using a full trellis), so maybe I'll use those.

WOW! Thanks for sharing that Jan. That is one HUGE cummingiana. I can see it's pretty unruly, but it still looks gorgeous. I guess keeping it on a trellis is the best way to keep it *somewhat* neat :)

do you allow the vine to do what it wants until its long enough to wind around and back up on the trellis?

That's exactly what I do. Or sometimes If the vine is too unmanageable I'll just wrap it around at a higher part of the trellis (instead of waiting till it's long enough to wrap around the whole trellis). Hope that made sense! If not, look at the pic above that I posted of the hoya on the bamboo trellis - you'll see that I looped it around at the top third of the trellis instead of going all the way around it.

Yes, it did use up lots of space. It was all over the place and every Hoya near by was climbing up it's branches. For me it is a rather difficult species to make look really nice.

I used a stem from an artificial flower to maked a hoop. I should have made two of them, one on top of another. This little guy wants to wander all over the place. I've taken cuttings hoping it would branch out but is just starts growing at that cut end. Now I'm just trying to manuver the stems amoung each other, using clips and then let it do it's thing.

Bottom line seems to be that cummingiana is an overall unruly one! Still not sure what I'll do with mine. I think I have 8 or nine plants in a 4" pot with lengths anywhere from a few inches to about 18".

ima digger, thanks for posting your experiences with trying to make it branch! I was wondering about doing just that. Are there any other hoyas which also don't branch?

I think the question is which hoyas DO branch! I don't think many do. The only ones I can think of are H. multiflora and H. lobbii - those will branch into 2 stems at the point where you cut them. I'm sure there are more, but none that I know of.

My cummingiana only has 2 stems or plants in a 4" pot, they are side by side. I have a dowel rod (small) stuck in the dirt inbetween them with a orchid clip holding each stem to the dowel rod. I don't plan on keeping it this way but for now that's about all I can do with it. My cummingiana is only about 4 or 5 inches tall. I will take a pic and post tomorrow if I get time this evening.

I am absolutely amazed at everyone else's cummingiana, they are so huge.
