Spacecoast Sweetness: my longest and latest bloomer

IÂm just amazed at this DL. ItÂs been blooming for over a month (starting July 8) and still has lots of buds left. IÂve only had this 3 years and itÂs only a small clump. At this rate it will easily be my latest bloomer. I just looked it up on Tinkers and itÂs listed as an early! (But I think itÂs a southern bred DL, maybe that makes a difference in when it blooms here in Zone 5: not sure how that works). I have never seen so many buds on one DL. It is listed as 5 way branching and a bud count of 50. Well, I can believe it. Plus every single flower is picture perfect: a little ruffled gem.

I have never tried hybridizing but this makes me want to! Of course I donÂt have much left that is blooming, but maybe IÂll try it with Pardon Me. Pardon Me is always making pods, does that mean I should use the Spacecoast Sweetness pollen on the Pardon Me?

Sp. Sweetness is a tet and Pardon Me is a dip....they won't cross. Once in a while you'll get a pod to set but it will normally not develope and just fall off. You need another tet to use Sp. Sweetness on.

Oh, I should have thought of that...it just spontaneously popped into my head to cross my 2 cutest small daylilies. Have to look up whatÂs still blooming and see what they are, dip or tet.

The real Northern European Once Bloomers -- Albas, Gallicas, Centifolias and the rest of the tribe -- won't bloom much here, and the don't live long, either. So I've given up on that form of frustration. And the Asian "once-bloomers" -- the banksiaes, and Fortuniana -- actually repeat a bit through the year. But we also have now a few big old Ramblers, and I don't know what they will eventually do. 'La Fraicheur,' 'Silver Moon,' 'Guadalupe Volunteer.' As the climate changes, we're beginning to get at least a little winter chill, so I'm hoping those Ramblers will someday put on a real big show in the spring. And I'd be remiss if I did not mention 'Indian Love Call,' a once bloomer that simply explodes with bloom for almost 2 months of spring, and follows up with a fall display of colored leaves. Actually, Gorey wrote and illustrated many bizarre books, and his home is a museum on Cape Cod, I believe. I got Clare one of his books for Christmas a couple of years ago. It was about these strange children, and I think it was written in verse. It was called The Gashlycrumb Tinies. I talked to Clare a bit about your poems and book. She said getting them self published by Amazon's publishing company is easy. Then I forgot to get her to write down the details. But I think if you go on Amazon's website and hunt around, you'll find info on self publishing. I've seen the info many times. Clare was interested in the illustration idea, and I want to talk to her more about it. She's deep in a job right now, illustrating software on teaching children to read, and the publisher/editor who hired Clare keeps making the work more elaborate and changing things. Clare's stress level is building dealing with this person. Say....this thread is a great place to have private conversations I've noticed. Heehee. Maybe I should post a rose photo. Diane

My longest bloomers were Colorado Moonfire. (It actually was my first and last to bloom, and it had five bloom cycles with at least two scapes every time...and I had moved it last year to what I thought would be a better place. Must have been a better place. Not a fancy bloom, but what a workhorse! Pink Gingham: Four bloom cycles, and multiple blooms as well. Purple Maze: Multiple bloom cycles; not a lot of blooms at one time, but blooms for a long time, and another with multiple cycles. Philistine Champion: Like the Energizer bunny. Kept going and going. Brazen Bandit: bloomed all the long season with few interruptions and Mask of Time: Plain but plentiful blooms from the beginning to the end of the season. As you all kow, this was a very unusual season because of the mild weather and early start. I've had a couple of three cycles blooms before, but never like this. Great thread Debra. Kay

I don't have SC Sweetness, but I understand that it is the parent of SC Surprise Purple, SC Extreme Fashion, and SC Cotton Candy.

Maybe you could get still get something nice if you tried try to use a larger daylily with Spacecoast Sweetness.
Although I do think it would make nice small or pony-sized daylilies, too.

I can show you the couple seedlings from it that I have. The cross is SC Sweetness x Lavender Heartthrob.
The flowers are about 5 inches wide and on 26-28 inch scapes.

The purple has a bright, clear violet shade to it.

The later blooms were a solid pink, but still had the translucent water-color look to them.

I like them both.

Marbree...those are very nice seedlings, I especially like the first one. It's a beautiful color. Are they first year blooms?

Those ARE very pretty. I also like the purple.

I checked today: my last 2 tets blooming are Arabian Magic and James Marsh (which is practically on its last bud). Am I better off using S. Sweetness pollen on those two or the other way around? I donÂt know how to judge (or do it both ways?). One is semi-evergreen and the other dormant. Does that make a difference?

It doesn't matter which flowers you use for seed and pollen. They have all been used for seed and pollen parents according to Tinker's Garden Database.

Evergreen, semi-evergreen, and dormant just refers to how much the plant leaves die down in the winter. It doesn't matter either as long as both bloom and grow well in your zone.

Just be sure to make extra crosses if you can because daylilies don't like to pollinate in hot weather.

I'm not sure how much you know and if this would be a help for you, but I did find a link that tells how to hybridize daylilies.
