my late blooms, now gone :(

Seems things are just about over for the daylilies. In trying to organize my photos, I thought I would post those that were the last to bloom, most of these were in bloom the end of July and into August.

Dragon's Eye

Mahogany Magic, not typically late, but sent up rebloom scapes, was in bloom quite some time.

Parade of Peacocks, always a later bloom

Flying Carpet

Storm of the Century, did not see this one last summer, so glad it decided to bloom this summer.

Brutus, a nice late bloomer

Startle, kept sending up rebloom scapes, it didn't bloom last year, so guess it had to make up for that!!

Psalter and Harp, one of my last ones to get started.

Here is just a fun pic, I was in Lowes and found this squirrel feeder, I stood in the store just laughing, it really struck me as being so funny, guess I am easily entertained. The squirrels do sit in the chair, but it seems everytime I get my camera, they take off.

What a great bloom season it was!! Here is my large island bed.

This is my Pink Bed, so many great pink ones, of course there was a thread on this forum some time ago with just pink ones, and I had to fill a new bed!! You guys are great enablers.

Of course, here is Bowie, he likes this cement cat best!!

OH MY GOODNESS, CINDY. I get going up and down trying to pick out a favorite bloom, and I can not pick just one.They are all so beautiful, with each one being prettier then the last.Then I get to the flower beds and they are all simply gorgeous. Every one is just landscaped so beautifully.Thank you for showing us all your beautiful place. Bowie looks soo content,and he is soo pretty.I love Cats,and injoy seeing pictures of them.

Thank you for sharing your pictures! Like Jean, I can't pick just one. Great picture of Startle, I've heard that it doens't often bloom nicely but yours looks lovely. Your garden pictures are just gorgeous, I keep going back & looking.
Bowie is really enjoying having someone to snuggle with.

I don't feed anything but astilbe...mostly I just use alfalfa pellets on everything...and a little osmocote on the astilbe. This is their first year....they don't "know" yet. And this is such a crazy summer weather wise that they might be screwed up anyhow. And feeding them now won't make them bloom later....they just bloom once. Give them another spring to figure it out. I'll be using some home-made organic fertilizer. Also will mix up a couple of trash cans of fish emulsion to pour on after watering well and will start some alfalfa tea 'brewing'. It takes two weeks so it would have been good to have right now as it really make plants grow fast. There was a discussion on one of the rose forums that the tea is far superior than using the dry alfalfa pellets. Buster, I'd go ahead and cut the roses back by about a third and give them some fertilizer. Any kind will do, even lawn fertilizer formulated for use in the spring is good, about a cup of dry fertilizer scratched in around the top of a mature rose. Be sure that is has slow release nitrogen. It will say that a certain percentage is'urea coated' nitrogen. Fall lawn fertilizer has fast release nitrogen that could burn the roots. Water the roses before application and water well afterwards. Keep up the watering and the roses will probably surprise you with their beautiful blooms. Let us know, okay? Incidentally, I use hedge shears for the main pruning and finish up taking out dead branches, etc. with hand pruners. It takes too long to do it all cane by cane. Carrie, you can't do much better than manure. You get the alfalfa second hand which is much better. I have to fake getting it that way by making tea ... oh well :-) Just found what's linked below. I agree with Darleen. Your temps are most likely too cool when the spike starts growing. Cool temps slow down the growth. Once the spike starts forming, try to give the plant warmer temps and the spike will grow faster. I run into a similar problem here in Florida. Mine live outside, they begin spiking in November as the nights cool down. The spike grows then we get hit with cool daytime temps in Jan/Feb. The spikes begin to stall and the buds stay small. As soon as the daytime temps increase, growth starts again. Very frustrating. I have 5 Phals now, only one is blooming. The rest are just sitting with spikes and buds. When I grew in NY my Phals always bloomed around January. But my house temps were fairly steady and they grew in large windows which were very bright. Hope this helps for next year. Jane

purslane, all the books say they do remember and come back. Apparently those tiny brains have very detailed maps of food sources, and they would need it to live thru the long migrations. I also have seen it myself when I didn't hang my feeders up one year-- several birds coming back to the very spot in the middle of my deck and hovering around there. Here in zone 6, St Louis, all the wonderful buzzing and chasing is gone and I am not seeing them every day. Also the feeders don't go down much. But some are out there, I have seen two in the last week, and 2nd one two days ago. I figure these are the second brood stragglers, too little and young to compete well with the big guys for food, so stayed skinny and got held back from migrating earlier. I have seen some every year into mid-late October with nights into the low 30's. I keep a rich mixture out this time of year to help them get fat enough to leave. The books say they have to fatten up before migrating in case they don't find food forward. They get so fat that if they were fatter they couldn't fly! You can see the fat white bellies when you see them sideways. Before mine disappeared this year, they had that. Definitely pear shaped. Earlier in the year they are straight and skinny. My guess is that in zone 8 you will still get some stragglers if you leave your feeders up, tho you won't see many..

I like BLUEBERRY BREAKFAST and DRAGON'S EYE best. That first garden shot makes me wish it was already next spring. But I know that is a long way off:(

I love the front yard island bed. And of course I love your backyard. So sorry its all done for the year but then again there is always next year. Bowie looks pleased with his friend :-))

I love the bed shots and Bowie. Startle is really pretty, Cindy. Lovely blooms. It is a downer when they are through, but I guess that's life and we always do reach that time of year. At least, you have a lot of new beauties to look forward to this next year.

These are beautiful garden shots, very nice job. I particularly like the scalloped meander of your bed shapes, not to mention the lovely blooms inside. :) And I don't know if Bowie is happy or not...I think maybe he's disgusted with what a lazy gray cat that is in the garden...never gets up to play!

Love your garden pics. I had gotten STARTLE from a seller but wasn't sure it would do okay here. It was just planted this spring and no blooms this year either :-(. I heard it was a difficult cultivar so I'm anxious to see how it will perform here. I think your pic of it is very pretty.
