Late blooming Astilbes blooming now?

I thought I had purchased some late blooming Astilbes - August Light - that was supposed to bloom Late Summer, and it's blooming now. Thought late summer was closer to August.

I confess to just planting them with mulch and a little compost. Should I have fed them something like Miracle Gro or a long lasting pellet food (can't remember the name, but it begins with the letter O)?

Also, I never feed my perennials with any mid summer fertizer...is this a good idea generally speaking and will it encourage blooms and plant health?

Thanks.

Jan
