Daylily Advice for a Beginner

My progress so far:

I bought the Petit/Peat book: The New Encyclopedia of Daylilies, but I haven't even opened it yet.

I have prpeared two different flowerbeds, and they currently have annuals growing in them - verbena, zinnias, & marigolds - I just wanted to put something in them this season for some summer color. I have only three types of daylilies anywhere else on my property and they aren't close in proximity to the flowerbeds I've prepared.

That's it. So now, I would like advice for the novice about hybridizing daylilies. What and when should I buy? I've looked at hundreds of lilies from $3.00 to $300. I've looked at them for sale on daylily sites, gardening sites, ebay, and catalogs. I'm getting overwhelmed, and I haven't even bought one yet!

Using your expertise, can you give me a jump start with regard to hybridizing tips? I would love to get my start with the help of you experts. Thanks.
