White centered varieties tend to be trickier to grow than others. This is due to the fact that the lesser amount of green in the leaves means the plant can make less chlorophyll. If you look for those with smaller white centers, they will be more vigorous. Look at Night Before Christmas. It's a beautiful plant with draping leaves. Also consider Lakeside Love Affair. High Society is supposed to be small and goes nicely with my June. It starts out bright yellow in the middle and fades to white.

High Society is a sport of June so it will look very similar. It's considered a small Hosta, so it will be very close in size to June. It's a good choice. The leaf shape and plant shape will be the same.

My favorite variegated, white centered hosta is American Sweetheart:

Gesilla is busy doing taxes. American Sweetheart is another really nice white centered variety. It has really good substance because it's a tetraploid plant which helps prevent burn out. It's a little large for your spot. Zillis says that he has seen one as large as 21" x 47". But it will take 5 or 6 years to approach that size. You could put it there, but you'll probably end up having to move it at some point.

What book are you using? Take a look at Americana. It's a sport of Loyalist and has a small white center. I planted one last summer and it did well. It's supposed to be vigorous and about 18 x 24. Sort of a small/medium.

Hosta 'Risky Business' is a 2 ft wide green with a white center, medium size, see the Hosta Library.

Have a 5 minute break -- (booked solid until 9:00 tonight) -- here's Risky Business, another one of my favorites!

After I had the new bed made, I bought quite a few hostas, Risky Business was one of them. I have it planted near Summer Breeze. We'll see if that was a good or bad decision. I do have a list of 'filler plants' to get and am trying to narrow it down. I am leaning towards getting Americana though. Thanks guys. Marg

Marg, Americana is a great choice. I'd post a picture of mine, but it was eaten alive by slugs or earwigs last season.

I looked up Americana on the Hosta Library. It's a real beauty. As you say Karen, there are many, many more I'd like to get. Right now I have June, Risky Business, Summer Breeze and by summer I will have Americana in the same area. Hope the combo works out. The first thing I have to do before planting Americana is to cut down the half dead pine that's close by before it falls on my other hostas. The pines were here when we moved in and were planted to close together - they aren't doing to well. We are slowly replacing them with Sugar Maples. Marg

Silver Maples have a lot of surface roots. I do not know if my mature maples are Sugar Maples, but they have orange-red leaves in fall and do not have a lot of surface roots. Hostas love it under mine.

We already have a lot of Sugar Maples planted. The only problem we've had with one was that it's roots stopped growing. All the trees are planted in the same type soil. Even the arborist we had out couldn't explain it. I know the problem with the Silver Maples. We had them on our other farm and never again! Marg
