Nice bloom Lydia and huge plant....are they always so stingy with their blooms? i have large pubicalyx too thats never bloomed for me....i keep waiting though!.....looks like yours gets a bit of sun with the red on the leaves.....
Yeah, very stingy. I have others of the same in hanging baskets & also, 1-2 flowers only. The one that's a good bloomer is Red Buttons. A lot prettier blooms too.
I have a pubicalyx labeled as a Red buttons but its pretty small plant yet so not sure if it is or isnt since it hasnt bloomed...the new growth is quite red when the leaves start growing.....would be nice to see one of these bloom down the road!
Lydia, you have these ground planted??? You know, I'd be doing cartwheels for ONE flower! I have had mine five years now, and zip, nada, do dah! I've been beating everyone over the head with Eleanors, so there is hope yet.
Thank for sharing your lovely photos, and growing environment. And at least one umbel is better than one flower on an umbel. And yes, I'm jealous!
Actually, just the pubicalyx is planted in the ground. I guess it was my guinea pig. I wanted to see if it would survive our winters before I plant any more. It passed the test with flying colors, we had our first snow in close to 100yrs. Next one up is kerrii. That one's a tough cookie too.
I had mine for many years, hanging in a west window in my bathroom. It grew like great guns, but never bloomed. I got my little GH off my kitchen a few years ago and out there it went. Within 6 months or so, it started blooming. For it's size, it doesn't give me the number of blooms I'd get off of others, like kerii or rubra, but I'll get 3 or 4 buds at a time. It seems to need to rest more than the others, too.
