I think I'm approaching your limit, Robert. LOL I'll need to add it up for sure but my Cmas and bday money are nearing an end! I'll get my orders together and deliver the staggering results tomorrow.

One other fun thing I did this year was join the AHS and the IHS (Indianapolis), Dave's and got a Hosta Finder!

Right at $400 on my private collection. I have to stop there as I am digging up around 700 this year and putting them in pots. I need to free myself of the worries of "volestation". It can really take the fun out of collecting!

I'm with Ken here......zip.....zero.....nada.....At least so far. With the new catalouges coming out and cabin fever beginning to hit hard it is getting real hard to maintain though.....lol....thankfully I have some seedlings going from seeds or I would have spent a couple of hundred dollars like I normally would have by now.....lol.....Have a lot of projects in the house this year and am trying very hard to resist the urge......but you know that resistance is futile!

this question is asked on every forum that I'm on, once or even twice a year, is it a guilt thing? like are you supposed to be spending your money on something you like? or spending it on something that someone else likes?, what is the relevance? if I like it, I buy it,no excuse. if it's $10 or $1000. lol, jim,,,,i didn't win the lottery yet....sooo...NO $1000 hostas for me....

i went NUTS last year,,,,started with mail order,,,then hit the local stores,,,,,,,then hit some of the "NOT so local stores",,,,then the NEWHS sale,,,,,and then some hosta society members sales,,,,and then had to hit the good places on the way to visit the kids,,,,,LOL

so far this year.....i have my name on a "Teachers Pet".....and i am trying my darndest to resist that "Stitch in Time" this year....

jill, I've been collecting Hostas now for hybridizing purposes. so that has given me an added focus to this hobby. I've added lots of streakers, interesting leaf forms, colors. I have been corresponding with as many hybridizers as I can find. they have been generous with their knowledge and have sent me seed from their collections and plants that they are using. but there are ones that the only way to have them is to buy them. there are some new ones I've seen from Japan that, if I had the money I would get in a heartbeat. I'll have to check on my Mutual Funds. I still might. Jim

Stopped smoking January 1st.
My profit: 4 Â (5 $) a day = 1825 $ a year.
I'll spend half of that on hostas and still save 912,5 $ this year.
Early May I'm paying Danny van Eechaute a visit. I haven't seen his collection yet, although it is the largest collection in Europe (somewhere between 2000 and 3000 different hostas ?) and he doesn't live that far away.
I'm sure I'll find some new additions for my garden (even though I only collect solid colored plants).

I really, really do collect only solic colored plants.

Of course, when I first started, I bought anything that was affordable and good looking to me, all sizes and colors.

Since last year however, I stopped collecting variegated plants. Well ... almost. Every now and again is see a multicolored plant so lovely I can't leave it (I confess, I bought 'Spring Fling' last year). But let's say + 95 % is solid colored.
Why ? I want to create a shade garden with tranquility written all over it; nothing loud, not even the colors.

To make things even more bizar ... I'm now trying to collect all species, varieties and hybrids that are/were found in the wild. It's a though job, but hey, someone's gotta do it (preserving all those hosta genes for prosperity, I mean).

I love the species also, Rob! What a cool, cool idea! My favorite hostas are the monster greens (Jade Cascade, Flower Power, Montana Macrophylla, etc) w/ cascading habits and longer leaves.

So far about $50.00, but I'm not finished yet. I'm really trying hard to be good and also to go with plants with a faster growth rate. We just signed a purchase agreement on 13 acres of land ( 7 acres wooded). Closing date 3-1. Though we don't plan to start building yet this year, I'm trying to remember that the more I put in here, the more I have to dig and divide.

Never mind the money yet, I'm trying to find space 1st. Then I'll see (or should I say decide) what I will spend.

I think I'm up to about $400 and haven't even ordered from Jim's yet.

Pietertje, I think you're right!! No sense, but I have an answer, I purchase for resale and auctions and therefore go a little overboard. Actually I probably spend about $600 for my private collection and display garden. Stay warm up there!!!

what a fine group of Hostaholics!!!!! I'm proud to be among you. Rob, you live near Danny Van Eechaute, that's mean to post that. I have been collecting species also of course I collect everything. mostly trying to build a several hybrid lines. I don't know what I'm doing yet but I have lots of nice looking seedlings from 2006. I'll be going to the Seattle's NW Garden Show on Feb 14, I know I won't get out of there for less than $500. Naylor Creek has a sales area I want to hit early. hostajim1

I think it's mean of Danny to have gathered such a enormous collection. Imagine how depressed I will feel whem I have to go home to my tiny 350 plant collection afterwards.
