OK, so how do you tell Dream Weaver, Dream Queen and Thunderbolt apart? The first two are sports of GE and the latter is a sport of Elegans (which is the parent of GE from which it sported). The three of them look the same to me. But I only have Dream Weaver. Does anyone have all three?

Last year the contributor 'dhaven' had these very good instructions : "Some varieties are very picky about growing conditions, and unless they are planted in optimum conditions, they will either remain small, or fade away and die. The best example of this I know of is Great Expectations, which also happens to be my favorite hosta. A great many people have lost this one, sometimes more than once. I have three very large mature plants, and they are the prettiest thing in the garden. It took some experimentation, but there are three things that GE absolutely must have to thrive. First, and most importantly, plant it shallowly. It's going to be a very large plant, so the natural inclination is to plant it deeply, but this will kill it faster than anything else. Plant it so shallowly you are convinced that it will tip over, and you've got it right. Secondly, it likes a lot of light. Dappled shade is ideal, but it will take several hours of direct sun, either morning or afternoon. Third, it likes a lot of water. If you give a GE all three of these things, you will increase your chances of growing it into an absolutely stunning plant. " I have two Great Expectations, and they are doing fine. Thank you so much, glad you saw our posts! The third hosta behind the Frosted Dimples (the one with the light center, with the heart-shaped leaf that's quite visible) is quite pretty too from what I can see in that shot. Please let me know the ID of that one as well, if you don't mind. I find it interesting that in that photo your Frosted Dimples and Aristocrat both look taller than the 12-14 inches the online info says they mature to, but I guess what makes them appear taller are the three short hostas near them. I was trying to stick with medium size of around 16 inches (14-18 being preferences), but seeing all of your guys' beautiful pics, already have several newbies that are under 14 inches :) Not only that, but have gone in the other direction too! :-S We'll see how this all turns out, LOL.

How much sun for GE progeny Dream Weaver or Dream Queen?

Les, this picture of Dream Queen was taken on June 12, 2012. It is growing well under spruce trees and has a northern exposure, so it does not get a lot of sun but it is well watered. I planted it at the same soil level as in the nursery pot. I've had to repot my Dream Weaver as it was not doing well in the ground in an eastern exposure, which by all accounts should be a superior location. I believe the difference in growth can be explained by the amount of WATER they received. I think water is the key to a hosta thriving and sunshine is key to the rate of growth. But these are not new concepts to this forum. So to answer your question I would say that water is more important than the amount of sunshine that DQ and DW get as long as the amount of sunshine is adequate.

"As you can see from the picture the pot it is in is standing in a saucer which gets topped off with rainwater every couple of days over spring and summer and it must have really liked all that water because as I said, it went from 3 to 7 shoots over the summer" pietertje I think I've proven with all my work on water that hosta cannot get too much water all the way to the crowns can being under water. This disproved my final belief that crowns under water would be a problem, had to give up that old wives tale when I observed the plants putting their own crowns under water and I put crowns under water with no ill effect. I have all three Steve. I can't tell them apart. Thunderbolt seems to be growing the fastest. I have a 5 year old Dream Weaver that is still only 2 eyes. The darn rabbit found all three of them this spring despite that fact that they are all about 50 feet apart.

There were tons of large Dream Queens this year at our local nurseries.

Of the four look-alikes, Dream Queen has been my favorite, but perhaps simply because of where it is located. The differences among the four are subtle, mostly in the size of the yellow centers. Here are my four:

Great Expectations

Dream Weaver

Dream Queen

Thunderbolt (end of season and showing it)

Thunderbolt is my favorite. It just looks good and is such a better grower for me than the others. Dream Weaver is slower than cold molasses and Great Expectations isn't far behind.

I agree with Tim in respect to Dream Weaver, still only one eye after 2 years, but bigger leaves. I have 2 Dream Queens and 2 Thunderbolts, were readily available, I liked them, bought them. Thunderbolt is the better grower, but Dream Queen is not far behind. I have no problems with Great Expectations, but the one in some afternoon sun has a lot of smaller leaves, the one in only morning sun looks normal.

They must all be hard to grow unless you live in the Pacific Northwest. I currently have 2 Great Expectations, one in the ground and one in a pot. Neither are showing off. I have a Dream Queen that had it's 3rd year last year and I took 2 picture of it with its 4 or 5 leaves. I also bought a Dream Weaver locally and kept it in a pot.

The most success I've had with Great Expectations is several years ago with one in a pot. The first picture is of that plant at it's best. I could move the pot around and give it what it wanted. Unfortunately that winter it went to Hosta Heaven. The second picture below is not mine. It's in my sisters garden outside Seattle. Maybe that's where Hosta Heaven is because her plants (most of them) grow like weeds. This Dream Weaver is on the east side of her house which it obviously loves. It is as blue in September as it is in this picture.

Here is my Dream Queen from last spring. Not a lot of of leaves,but huge leaves. I tried to grow Thunderbolt,but the first year it came back up very tiny,then just faded away. I wouldn't replace it. Phil

I was going to post a series of picture to see the difference of the 4 different ones that look alike. Dream weaver, Thunderbolt. Dream Queen and Great expectations and found this site from days gone by. Where are these people now? Steve mass. made aa excellent point as to how they are connected or not connected

Dream Queen is the nicest of my four, , others seem to go backwards or very slow for me

Thunderbolt not doing really too bad either

Then there is this Dream Weaver, I had a hard time finding it and has gone backward considerably

Great Expectations slow , slow , slow. Big leaves but not many shoots(3) now 1 in 2012

I am sure some of you have some beauties .. show them off! Maybe there is hope for mine someday
