Cabin Fever

Reading about hosta sprouting, lists made and orders being placed -- really has the Cabin Fever rising in me. Receiving unseasonable rain today in Minnesota. But it'll soon be back to freezing temps and more snow. Have my garden photos on screensaver and desktop - so a lot of daydreaming.

A lost summer last year with house and neighborhood under construction - new streets, siding, gutters, driveway and roof with lots of dust and trampled hosta. Add to that many new hosta in 09 so anxious to see a fresh look in the gardens and yard.

Still to do - repaint inside and start some hosta seeds -- that'll get me to mid-Feb or so ....maybe plan a new garden bed.... jeez... this is going to be a long wait till April and May.

Very quiet on the forum, how are you all managing?

Hi from sunny FL.

Just think of how wonderful everything will be when you are completely finished and can just think about hostas.

We can't get Internet signal in the parks we are staying at so have to go to McDonalds and use their free one. Fred gets ice cream everytime we stop and it isn't helping his waistline.

Lots of frost damage to the tender plants here. Not nearly as pretty as other years. The azaleas are damaged also.

I try to get outside on every fairly nice day. A couple of days ago I pruned my Japanese maples, with 43 of them, that took up several very enjoyable hours. Yesterday I cleaned up all my Daylily foliage and covered them with mulch. One day I turned my compost pile, anything to get into the garden. This week is supposed to go back into the deep freeze again. April seems a long way off. I need a new roof too, and seeing your photos, I'm really dreading it.

mmmmm, seeds, good idea. All that hope and potential- priceless when the summer feels like it was just a fantasy. Mind, I expect your pics of your lovely garden will go some way to keeping your spirits up. This was my first year with a camera and I find myself going back to last May.....July....September....in disbelief. I love your Violette - I did a cutting of this last year and am now really looking forward to its first blooms. Are they toadflax (linaria purpurea) in front - the purple and pink spikes.

That's my problem as well. I also do a lot of vegetables, and we finally decided to eat healthy (we'll see how long it's going to last, hope untill the harvest), so I have order yet again tons of different greens. No trip to any story that carries seeds is without some purchase. But I'm seriously "gardening" right now in my zone 5b (Chicago subs). I have some greens and lettuce going in my kitchen window hopping to put them soon into a hoop house. Yet, my husband has to finish it. I planted peas outside (!!!) in a large container - now under the snow. Also, last week, I planted peas in containers that I keep in my screen porch. Yesterday, I sowed lettuce, radish and spinach in containers on the screen porch. My screen porch is becoming my green house. Of course, still ws'ing, almost 100 large, fat milk jags outside. I'm still new in this, I'm in my third year, but my beds are already full. Time to make some more....

Yesterday was our 14th day in a row of 100-degrees F or higher, and it topped out at 110-degrees F yesterday. Thankfully we'll have highs in the low 90's this week, and a much needed break from the extreme heat.... But the humidity will be higher and I always think that is worse at any temperature than dry heat. I get up at 3:30 a.m. each morning so I can get everything I need done before 9:00 a.m. when the heat really sets in. The gardening is done by 7:00 or 8:00. I love being at home, so cabin fever or getting bored doesn't fit my personality. I've been spending the hot afternoons making Wonder Ovens (aka Wonder Box - a form of thermal cooking) for Christmas (see link below). Your recipe for homemade mayonnaise made me think of my mother. I don't think my parents bought a jar of mayonnaise until I was a teen in the late 60's - it was always homemade. If you ever are concerned with using raw eggs, you can pasteurize it/them first by bringing the egg/s to 140-degrees F in a pan of hot water, and maintain the temperature for 3-1/2 minutes. Place in cold water to stop the cooking process. It's enough heat to pasteurize the egg, but not enough to completely cook it so you can still use it "raw". Lots of raw whole foods these days (but that's normal all year round) - especially with the garden producing. Cooling fruit or homemade fruit sorbet for dessert. Lots of homemade sprouts to use in wraps and on sandwiches now that it's gotten too hot to grow fresh greens. I also have a lot of pre-cooked meat, soup and chili in the freezer in user-friendly amounts we use when it's hot (cook once, eat twice - or more). Frozen seasoned steak strips or chicken for hearty dinner salads or a head start on a stir-fry, or quick Mexican entrees. Pulled pork has all kinds of uses.... I portion it in snack-bags and then vacuum-seal it in a FoodSaver bag. Add some bbq sauce and a homemade burger bun from the freezer and top it with shredded cabbage (also from the garden). I baked some new (homegrown) potatoes in the Solar Oven the other day, reheated some chili (formerly frozen) in the Solar Oven as well, to top the baked potatoes for a quick meal along with sliced fresh vegetables from the garden. You always take great pictures.Even your pictures of destruction are well done. I hear the cabin fever cry! It was 48 today so I built a bonfire with limbs and sticks from the yard and woods. I then pitchforked about 20 carts of leaves and piled them in the ravine. This was my first outdoor fix in weeks and it feels great to be tired from physical labor.I will start my seeds in early March but I want to do it now. Give me something green!

I got out this weekend but not for something fun! I picked bagworms off the leyland cypress and the blue spruce at our new house! Anyone had problems with these?

We here in zone 5a had 50 dgrF, rain and wind today. I need to cover up the M.Aureo and Great Expectations with more mulch. I bought some hostas and conifers yesterday. The cold is starting tomorrow again. But magically on April 1 exactly all snow will be gone here.

swmogarden, make sure you actually need a new roof. I got mine cleaned of moss and black algae 2 months ago, and it looks like new.
