reliable vendors?

I searched and could not locate this on the forum:

What vendors would you consider to be the most reliable in terms of getting a hosta variety that is not virused? Are there nurseries out there that test? I do know it takes years possibly for it to show up so it would not be 100% but...

I have many varieties at home that are 15-20+ years old that are definitely not virused. I want to purchase some more but really do not want to infect my "old faithfuls".

I did check hosta library for susceptible varieties, and the ones I am looking at are not on there.

As for susceptible varieties. It was once believed that only some hostas were susceptible. It is now known that ALL hosta have the potential for virus, just that they may or may not show symptoms for many years.

As for Hosta Virus X (HVX), if you're practicing good garden hygiene, as you should anyway, you won't infect your old faithfuls. HVX only transmits thru sap, not splashing rain or one leaf touching another (as long as both don't have open wounds).

Hello and welcome, Blooms! I had asked for mscynthia about possible locations around the DFW area to get adeniums from a friend of mine in the nursery industry that lives up there and he said perhaps the higher end nurseries...but they might be expensive. But he knows of my adenium obsession and always has an ear out for places for me. There are a few locations around Houston, however, that Marie had shared with me. They are spread out so if you drove from one to the other it would definitely be an all day affair. Let me know and I could share this list with you. I had bought two adeniums from adeniumrose.com and I was happy with the size and shapes of them. I did buy the proven blooms. I would buy from them again. Kirk

Hi Barbara, Since my user name is DublinBay, I guess I better say something here. I really like mine--blood red roses just blaze in the sun! However, I don't think I'd call it a tall climber--maybe 12 ft maximum when fully mature--but mine is only two years old, so I guess we will see. Here's some good news: yes, it has pretty good disease resistance. Mine is wrapped around a pillar, but I don't see why it couldn't be stretched along a fence. However, make sure you train it while the canes are younger and more flexible. They can get rather thick and rigid with time. I just discovered that I somehow deleted my more recent pic of Dublin Bay from photobucket.com--not sure when or how that happened--so you will have to settle for a first-year pic of it for now. I've bought mine from John Scheepers last year. It did not bloom yet, but the quality of the root was very good. I have a nice little plant now. It is a very reputable company. I had a mislabeled Amaryllis from them once. They replaced it - no questions asked.

I'm going to bump this because it's that season when many of us start thumbing through catalogs. I highly recommend Baker Creek Seeds. (rareseeds.com) I have ordered from them many times. I typically get seeds from them within a week. I have had only one "problem" (the free seeds they gave me were duplicates and I asked them not to send another batch, lol, so they sent three packages of different free seeds, wow!) and their customer service was phenomenal. Heirloomseeds is also fantastic. I've only ordered from them once, but I wouldn't hesitate to order from them again. Tomatofest.com is great. I've heard mixed reviews about them, but I had a great experience. They even included a handwritten note in the package. I was astounded.

For very large hosta types I went to the Land of the Giants Hosta Farm. They ship plants with close to mature large leaves, meaning you do not have to wait too many years to see a big plant in your garden.
