Daylilies that don't fully open.

I have an Ed Norris daylily that has never opened up fully. I've had it for three years, and it blooms well and is otherwise healthy. Will it eventually open up, or did I get a dud plant?

I am wondering if perhaps you meant BILL NORRIS rather than ED NORRIS? ( there is no Ed Norris registered.) Usually if a bloom doesn't open well here, it is temperature related. Some blooms just do not open well especially if you have cool morning temps. I live in the upper South and we have been quite hot this summer - BILL NORRIS has had no trouble opening here ever, that I can remember!

If you consistently have cool morning temperatures, that is likely the reason for the blooms not opening fully.

Oops, I meant Bill Norris. Yours looks great. Mine is the same color...just doesn't open up fully. All my other daylilies have no trouble with their blooms, no matter what the growing conditions. Will it ever fully open?

You can use an old judging trick which may work. Hold them in the position you want and tape them there with a little strip of cellophane (Scotch) tape, remove in a few days and see if they stay that way. I am not into the judging end of orchid growing, but I know that those who are have many tricks to make the flowers present well and look their best. They use stakes, tape, twist ties, string, glue, weights, etc. Of course all to be removed before presentation. If you can find an old time participant in the judging circuit, you can learn a lot about the methods which are used and may be useful to your hobby.

Glad to hear that they are doing well. I will probably just leave WONDER OF IT ALL. Now that its not blooming I forget how aggravated I was at the non opening blooms and just remember how gorgeous the few blooms that did open were. But I think its a problem here in my garden with really really edged daylilies. You know, I went on all those garden tours here this summer and I do did not see any of the really super edged chicken fat daylilies at all. So maybe they just don't open here (on LI) or maybe its my garden. WONDER OF IT ALL is the worst but I have SOCIAL GRACES from MARYOTTS has trouble opening. I had no pictures of it this summer because of the partially open blooms. Yet Carla in NJ has it and its fine in her yard.

For me, dayliles not opening well is sometimes due to cool weather, but other times it is due to a relative lack of water. You might want to try giving the daylilies supplemental water. (Extra water may help with the overall bloom opening (and size), but it may not do much for daylilies which have a genetic fault such that one petal never wants to open or recurve properly, in line with the others. At least, that has been my experience.)

The sepals around the bloom attract insects who will then hopefully "stop by" in the middle of the bloom and help pollinate the "true flowers" in the middle of the bloom. Some lacecaps have a lot of sepals several rows), others have only one row around the bloom and others will have a smaller number yet. The sepals can be white or they can turn blue-purple-pink based on soil pH. Most lacecaps bloom on old wood.

Bill Norris is one that has never had a problem here, but our temps are probably very different. I had a daylily last year that did not open, but after the first couple of blooms, it was fine this year. I suppose it just needed to settle in better, but it seems like 3 years would be time for Bill to adjust.
I have Bill Norris & Ed Brown, I always want to call it Ed Norris too.
