I purchased a potted Hanakisoi tree peony this spring that was barerooted and shipped to me fully leafed out with a huge bud on it ready to flower!(I know, I know...I did not pay alot for it, but sure hope I can get it to grow well for me too)....I potted it up again and removed the bud allowing it to open in a bud vase indoors(oh my...it took my breath away!...I love Hana:)....Of course with all the trauma, it went into shock and its leaves all wilted, starting to dry out on the ends. I just cut them off the plant yesterday, figuring it would be best for the plant to divert all energy into its roots. Was this the correct thing to do under the circumstances?(or have I further traumatized it?..guess I should have asked the forum first!)...I have it on a shady patio and am keeping the soil slightly moist, not watering every day, but not letting it get too dry. Its stem is still nice and green. Our weather right now is hot days and cool nights. I am just keeping it out of direct sun and wind and leaving it alone...but should I be doing anything else?..Should I be watering with B1 or Super Thrive perhaps?...It has not been long enough to know what its gonna do next...any suggestions or thoughts about what I can expect would be welcome.(and future tree peonies will be transplanted or shipped in the fall!!!!:)....Thank you for any advise..GardenLove

There are so many varieties of peonies that look similar, Redroses. What performs well in my zone 4B garden might grow like crazy or languish in the heat of your zone 6 garden. I'd suggest going to gardens with peonies in your immediate area and zeroing in on the ones that perform best there, saves you the heartbreak of babying roots that will never perform the best in your area. Cheddar Charm is a Klehm peony bred from Bowl of Cream. It's a Japanese that blooms mid-season for peonies so should be done before the heat of summer for you. I'd probably not try it here because Bowl of Cream has been one of my dismal failures, probably because of our late snows every spring. Just because one or both of the parents do poorly doesn't necessarily doom the child plant but...... The APS website has a listing of peony gardens by state if you're not sure what's in your area. I think Karen shared the list here last year as well if you just want to go back through a lot of the old posts, I do that sometimes in the winter when the weather's too bad to go outside. It's amazing how much info is posted here that I miss in the busy-ness of spring/summer that I collect later!

I did get them all planted in a single day! I had room (barely!) in a raised bed I made 2 years ago so the digging was easy. I'll figure out the next area to be converted to planting beds in the spring because that bed is bursting full....And I think you're doing absolutely great on your own, gardenchloe. Your pictures from last spring were gorgeous! Make sure you message me when you go peony shopping next spring, I'd love to go with. So looking forward to next spring!

Those were eyes, now they're shoots! Was it like this when you brought it home? Sometimes when a new peony comes from a colder zone into a warmer zone it'll start growing, sometimes even put up a leaf or 2 before cold weather knocks them out. That's a lot of growth for this time of year, think I'd contact the seller in case it doesn't come back up in the spring. If it was like that when you purchased it and they said that the growth should be buried I'd follow their advice, would just mound sand or fine soil over it rather than replanting. If I saw that kind of growth on my P. Japonica in the spring I'd be incredibly excited, I'm lucky to get 4-5 stems and mine's been in the ground for 3 years....
