will hardy plants survive freeze in pots?
Comments (15)the rule of thumb I hope to be true is if the plant is listed as hardy at least a zone or two colder than I am, it should be somewhat safe overwintering outside in a pot, but last winter, several plants that were supposedly hardy to zone 5 didn't make it through the winter in their pots, while some I don't think were quite that hardy (like the hot lips sage) did (and they were all in the same part of the yard, got treated the same)... I'm hoping to get my fall planting done over the next few days, assuming whatever that flu shot gave me 10 days ago is actually finally clearing up (probably should have seen the doctor). If it's something you got for fall planting and you're just not sure if you're going to get to it, if it's cheap and you thihnk it might make it, try putting the pots close to the house, where it will hold warmth and shelter them from the wind... If you have a lot of money invested, you might bring them in, but bear in mind I brought in 5 plants last winter, as well, and killed them just as handily with no water or light. Best guess, I think, lol. Jeff...See MoreWhat happened to my potted mint plant?
Comments (9)Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis) is an ultra hardy perennial and its natural habit is to die to the ground over winter and re-emerge in the spring. Trying to keep it leafy in the winter indoors is likely doomed to failure imo. Indoor winter growth would almost certainly be sickly and unattractive. It needs its winter rest and trying to make is work 12 months of the year will just weaken it. Comments (13)I have a question along these lines & thought it would be proper to bring it up in this post rather than start a new thread. What about Lemon Balm? Would it survive outdoors during a Z6b (Middle TN) Winter? Worst low temp probably only a few days of 15-20. Otherwise, average low of about 30 or so. If it wouldn't survive in these conditions, what's the lowest possible temps it can stand for long periods (would let me know where I would need to keep it; if storage closet would do or if it would need more warmth)? Also, will it need constant or much light during the Winter to survive? Any & all help appreciated. A friend has offered me 5 baby Lemon Balm plants & I don't want to take them if they will just die in my care. Thanks - Steve...See MoreHow hardy will mint in pots be over winter?
Comments (5)I lost a lot of mine this past winter. The ones in the huge tufa pots made it okay, but died back over the winter. The ones I lost were in smaller 2 to 5 gallon plastic pots. I think the reason was that after a week of temperatures in the 70's, it dropped to 6 degrees overnight. I lost a lot of other things, too. Not at all typical for us....See Moreneoguy
