Lavender dying branch by branch

I planted 4 Goodwin Creek Grey's in my new cottage garden this summer. Each quickly quadrupled in size, then started to die, branch by branch. At first it looked like an outer branch was broken, but then more and more withered. They don't seem to droop, like when I got new plants and didn't water them before they got planted. These just are full bushes, with dead branches mixed in, the leaves stay on but wither. From what I've read here, overwater seems to be the culprit of all lavender death. But does that occur branch by branch? Inner, outer, random? We've got heavy clay, we added compost, they seem so happy at first! Now the last one is affected and I give it 2 weeks before it's a goner unless I can figure this out. Any suggestions welcomed. Thx, Janice
