Garden photos

Last summer, at a house I share about a hundred miles north of New York City, I dug out a small garden from an old meadow, surrounded it with deer fencing, and removed hundreds upon hundreds of rocks, from small stones to eighty-pound boulders, from the clay soil. It's roughly divided into three sections for herbs, flowers, and a few veggies, though they're freely intermingled.

This has been its first full year. For a city gardener, it's been a fascinating experience to commune with earthworms, bees, butterflies, the occasional hummingbird, a small family of snakes, and the menagerie of other creatures who have made seasonal appearances. It's also been fun to see all my work with fork and shovel produce results!

I've wandered out into the garden every few weeks to photograph whatever I saw, and have put my favorite shots into a journal, which I'm updating regularly. I'd be happy to hear comments or suggestions, including whether they reflect your own garden experiences!

Beautiful photos to document your garden! Lovely up close shots....but I was also looking for an overview shot to see the whole garden.

Did you use any of the rock in building enclosures for your plants? I used fieldstone and 4x4 timbers to enclose my updated garden site.

Lisa, I've always appreciated the concept and practice of square foot gardening. It has always been a little to formal and precise for me though. I prefer the concept of edible landscape or in my case, edible jungle. You simply have to be aware of how large each will grow and how compatible different plants are with each other. If you noticed, the beans and onions have their own bed. I did plant the bell peppers in spaces that otherwise may not have been utilized in the same bed. Many say beans and onions aren't compatible, because onions are nitrogen hogs while beans produce nitrogen. They are right. I had to give the beans extra nitrogen because the onions were basically stealing the beans nitrogen or at least causing insufficient nitrogen to be available for the beans. Ted

Your garden is looking terrific, especially for this time of year. You must have had great growing conditions. Hard to tell from photos, but it looks like even the white parts of the leaves are fine. We had a lot of rain this year, but also had hot weather. Lots of fungal disease, a bit of southern blight, nematodes, slugs, and hail have taken their toll. Next year I'm going to forget about being organic and put on fungicide, Nemakill, Bayer three-in-one, and a systematic insecticide for the Japanese beetles and hickory borers. Hate to do it, but the garden is losing the war.

Gladie, your garden was gorgeous. I may not remember the entrance, but will never forget the hill of hostas in the back yard. Next convention, whenever that may be, I'll have to take a picture of the guidebook entry as the first photo so I know which garden is which.

Thanks, Betty! You should have seen me asking people how to strip sod and build a fence.... I was the village dummy for a while, but now at least have a nice rock pile to show doubters!

Good idea about overview shots, granite. Your link requires me to log in, but I remember seeing your beautiful new garden layout. I used some of the rocks as paving or corner stones and some smaller ones as mulch for potted plants (such as bay and mints). The rest are going into a stone wall that's being built elsewhere on the property. Meanwhile, here's an
