I have been waiting for Stephane Grappelli to open, she's new in my garden. The first flower opened and was 'dappled'. I really didn't care for that but now the second flower has opened quite nicely.

These guys have been nesting on the side of the house all summer. Now I can't even go out without watching where I step. They're just learning how to fly.

The little chick is so cute. Sorry to show my ignorance but I have no idea what type of bird and birds nest those are. Daylilies looking good. El Desperado is my favorite.

I love Hanson purples, but have never seen that one in gardens. I'll have to keep an eye out for it. I have always admired CHICAGO APACHE for its color. There's a place near here that sells field-grown clumps, and I might seek it out next year. I'm looking for bright reds anyway, and I don't have any of the Chicago daylilies.

BTW, just so you know, Stephane is a he, not a she. He was a famous jazz musician, violin in fact. For some great music, go to YouTube and search for Grappelli and Django Reinhardt. I'm bopping around in my seat right now to their well-known Minor Swing. (Oh wow!....while proofing my message, I decided to listen to Django do Sweet Georgia Brown. I love music as much as I love daylilies!)

Lovely pics. I am looking forward to my Gaillardia blooms next year. I was lucky enough to get it as a bonus in a trade and I am waiting for my Canna's. I think the daylily is either Abba, Burgundy Express or Bela Lugosi. These are the three deep burgundy daylilies with which I am familiar and there are subtle differences in the shade of the throat, the presence or not of a rufled edge, and fragrance. Take a look online and compare.

See, I like the rosy color of yours, its such a saturated pink! I just got BL this year, hoping it gives me more blooms next year. I think its not getting much sunlight, since my hibiscus took off, (its huge!) Its blocking all but late afternoon sun. Scared to move it though, I just planted it there in April. Don't want to stress it out too much. -Jessica

Ooh, I'd watch my step for a while, that chick just put a vicious hex on you! If looks could kill. I like Stephane Grappelli. El D & Chicago Apache are always great daylilies too. That last photo is pretty neat.

lynxe: thanks for the correction about he/she. I'll check it out on YouTube. CA is really vibrant red and really stands out.

ngraham: I found out what one kind of bird nesting there was, it was a tree sparrow that seems to have taken over the smaller 'house'. I still don't know what the other one is but I think it is some kind of sparrow too. We get some pretty neat cloud formations and sunsets before a storm. We're supposed to be getting rain for the next few days.

Marg, I could be wrong, but your bird house looks like a barn swallow's nest to me. There is a pond near me with a covered bridge and the swallows are always building nests in it that look just like that. That little chick certainly looks fierce!

Love your DLs! I grow Chicago Apache and El D, myself, though they have both been done now for a couple of weeks. Great plants - very colorful!

.... It's not so easy to see the details of the nest? It looks to be a CLIFF SWALLOW nest - they build them predominantly of mud and they resemble gourds with an entrance hole. BARN SWALLOWS also construct their nest of mostly mud and in (sometimes) similar situations, however, barn swallow nests are half-bowl shaped attached to walls or beams, open at the top. A quick Google search will show the adult bird's similarities and distinct differences - their tails are one of the key characteristics..

I think they may have been cliff swallows. At first they tried sticking the mud to the brick siding but that didn't work so theyh moved to the wood siding. Whichever, they're gone now and the hs has moved in. I'll have to google to see the difference. Thanks. Marg
