Daylily Garden Shots - Part One for Sunday

Hee, hee, I bet you thought you would see lots of beautifully blooming daylily beds but instead I did want to show the sections that are done blooming around here. If I did not have all those late bloomers this is all I would have to look at.

well,I think I see some Red Roses blooming in the second picture,A very pretty one, too.The Portulaca is still very pretty. It should bloom good till the first frost.and That might do it in.A light frost dont bother it,as I remember.You still have some very pretty daylilies blooming.FINALE ANSWER looks very nice and I love END OF SEASON.Thats a real pretty bloom.

Thanks Ngraham! There is a lot to like about Red Volunteer. Hubby even likes it, he likes the bold colors! It multiplies fairly quickly here and of course usually has several 'volunteers' that you can clip and plant, to further your Red Volunteer pleasure. I love the large blooms too. I don't have hardly any newer daylilies (yet). I have to get the daylily bed fixed and in order first. I have plenty of seedlings though that I am having so much fun with. It is the first thing I want to do in the morning, go outside to see the new faces! I have two Forestlake Ragamuffin babies to photo this morning. One is not completely open yet.

Not much grass left around here. There is lawn on the north side of my house between the driveway and my house. Of course, now theres less of it because I had my new 7 foot square raised iris bed build along in there. Otherwise all over the rest of the yard there are these grassy path areas. Those are what was left over of my used to be lawn after the garden beds just kept expanding and expanding.

I am glad you was able to grow some tomatoes.I had planted 2 of the Patio Tomatoes,and I got around 2 dozen maters off that one plant, then when they were slowing down,I planted another one, and it was loaded with tiny little ones,and I thought I woud have another nice bunch of them soon.Yesterday,I went out to check them for water,and ONE big green worm had ate up the whole plant,Was nothing left but the stalk.No leaves and not a tomatoe on it.Yep,I found that worm and killed it.Your zinnias are very pretty and the 4 o clocks too.I use to grow a lot of them years ago. Mulched Daylilies Garden Shots and Closeups

Jean- I sometimes put on the Neptunes Seaweed Fertilizer with a watering can if I am doing only a small section. If I am doing all the daylilies like I did the other day then I used the hose end sprayer. It is kind of thick so there is the possibilty that it could clog the sprayer. But so far it hasn't. I really don't know if using the straw would be better for you or not. Remember it comes in big heavy bales that I am sure you can't lift and you have to get it into a van and out. But you could probably get it delivered. Well, they load it but someone has to unload. It doesn't fit into a car, you need an SUV or van. The thing that it does do is really help with keeping moisture in the soil, but you have to put it on really thick. Sometimes it has weed seeds in it which sprout and then you have to weed on top of the mulch. But eventually it really, really improves the soil. I am not sure if you don't like the looks of the lighter cypress mulch that you would like the looks of the straw. Don't look anything like the looks of the dark pine bark mulch. As for weeds and mulch if you lay newspaper down and THEN put on the mulch those weeds really never get a chance to come up. You know I don't have many weeds around here because the mulch is pilled up everwhere and things are realily mulched around here. Christine- Thanks, I do love the Portulacas. I use the straw all over my garden. Doesn't matter if it is sunny or shady. I could never manage the weeds if this place was not heavily mulched. If I have fall leaves I use those but in the summer I don't have any so have to use the straw. I have staw mulch in my veggie garden area and I have it in my flower gardens. I have it in the paths and I have it between the plants. What I have found with some of the hardwood mulches (or any of the bagged mulches) is they they can get a hard packed crust over the top that water has a difficult time getting thru. I do have to put the straw on every year. If I put it on thickly enough it just makes it to next year. But the thicker the better. In the paths I usually lay down afew pieces of newspaper and then lay the straw directly on top. If there are weeds, I smush them down, put newspaper on top and mulch on top of that. It all breaks down. In betwen plants I have to yank out weeds and then mulch putting the straw around the plants. The straw does break down and the earthworms help with that as they love the straw and move in. It really enriches the soil and makes it soft and loose instead of hard packed and dry. No removing of the straw ever. I just keep on adding.

You were smart to plant the annuals to keep things going--and of course all your late bloomers. Sad to see the daylily season ending though isn't it?

brendasue- I usually post a fair amount of gardenshots. I do love to see what everyones gardens look like also.

Jean- There are roses blooming here and some up top in the second picture. The roses usually bloom again around here in August so thats about now.

Val- I always put in annuals to give me summer long color but the daylilies are my favorites. Don't want them to end.

I love your terraces...such a great way to make more space for flowers. I also love how you honestly show your gardens because we can all identify with the phases of summer. You are inspiring me to start a list of late bloomers that I am going to get next. I honestly never even paid attention to the bloom season when I purchased all of mine and now realize I unintentionally bought mostly mid-season bloomers. I need to focus on some earlies too, but mostly I want the lates because my roses are stars of the garden in June whereas right now I could use more daylilies blooming while the beetles destroy my poor roses.
I love 'Late Breaking News'. It is very bright and cheery.

Your terrace gardens still look great with the portulacas & zinnias. I wouldn't miss the daylilies if I didn't remember how glorious it looked with them :) Your 3rd photo of the bloomed out daylilies looks like most of mine right now, just kinda sad. I'm glad you ended with some blooming daylilies, brought my spirits right back up.

Celeste, I started just like you did. I picked pretty faces and paid no attention to bloom season. Most of us start that way and as far as I can see most people never do add many late bloomers. Much less any extra late ones. Once I realised that all those daylilies I started with would never rebloom here I soon knew that I needed late and extra late bloomers or the season ended much too soon.

Sometimes there is late bloomers here or there in the regular beds but mostly I have them grouped together so that they make an impact blooming. So by the time those lates have been going strong for a while, the regular mid season beds are done. I like it this way as they can't bloom forever and I have my regular season show with those beds and then the late show with other beds.

Nancy- First year I planted the terraces I had zinnias. Then after that no room for zinnias there. You don't know how many times I re-arranged the daylilies there to get the space to put the zinnias back in. I think it was three times until I got it right. So this year the zinnias are back in the terraces garden.

One reason I put zinnias in back of the very back bloomed out plateau was to give summer color back up there also. Then after showing all the bloomed out beds I had to show off some of the ones still blooming!

I really wanted to show the worn up and dried out areas (as Vickie called them) because they are such a contrast in my garden to the late and extra late bloomers beds. Those are in full bloom while the rest are memories of days gone by. Plus the heat of summer seems to affect those raised beds first when we get lots of heat with periods of no rain. So brown tipped sorry looking folliage. Lots of rain lately so all the daylilies should really perk up.

Today I am back to posting pictures of lots of bloom so lots to look at.

The garden here is winding down too. I like this time as I use it to decide on who goes, who stays and which ones I need to divide or move.

I am busy working on my Tall Bearded Iris dividing. When I finish that I will have to move on to some daylilies.

Ah me, Rita! It is painful to the the ones past blooming. At least you still have a good many lates. Late Breaking News is very pretty.

Some of those daylily beds are pretty depressing, aren't they? I try not to focus on them but rather on the late bloomers.
