More Garden Shots - Part Two for Sunday

Tomato Garden by the side of the porch. I had this space empty as I had moved Hydreageas out very early in the spring over to the other shadier side. So I needed somewhere to plant my tomatoes. I have 6 tomato plants here and they have been giving me lots of tomatoes.

Iris need dividing here. I have been working on iris dividing these past few days.

I am glad you was able to grow some tomatoes.I had planted 2 of the Patio Tomatoes,and I got around 2 dozen maters off that one plant, then when they were slowing down,I planted another one, and it was loaded with tiny little ones,and I thought I woud have another nice bunch of them soon.Yesterday,I went out to check them for water,and ONE big green worm had ate up the whole plant,Was nothing left but the stalk.No leaves and not a tomatoe on it.Yep,I found that worm and killed it.Your zinnias are very pretty and the 4 o clocks too.I use to grow a lot of them years ago.

Your tomatoes sure look healthy. I usually have a couple, but I never got any planted this year and I miss them. Love your little pond.

First, thanks to all for all of the kind comments, folks! Maximus, to answer your questions, no the beds are not immaculate by a long shot!! I constantly do battle with the wild garlic, which seems to be the worst weed here. Have to use a long trowel and get the entire bulb out by hand, as nothing else seems to work. The garden actually looks pretty ratty right now but once it gets a new coat of mulch (which won't happen until next month, as I have to dig up a bunch of orders over the next few weeks and of course, plant all the new ones) it will look neater.I use hardwood mulch and it almost completely dissipates in a year's time. I edge all of the raised beds which don't have the edging with a square edged shovel(by far my favorite gardening tool). This happens several times a season - have already edged once this year and will do it again just before the garden is mulched. When these beds were started years ago, I hauled in tons( literally) of a topsoil- compost-soil conditioner mix to amend our red clay. That raised all the beds from around 6" to a foot in some places. The back of the garden (which you can't really see from the pictures) is edged with big rocks to hold the soil in place since the yard slopes towards the back. The worst problem I have here is with the robins ( in the spring) and the **&&^ squirrels ( all year) who pull the mulch out!And the *&&^ squirrels love to plant acorns from my neighbor's oak tree - ugh! I took early retirement from teaching three years ago - otherwise, I'd NEVER have the time to work outside in the spring like this! It is very difficult when you work full time. ( I was a band director and there would sometimes be weeks w/no chance to even walk in the garden.) So, time is a big factor, and I'm very lucky to be able to work in the garden for days on end.

I first thought that first daylily was WOMAN AT THE WELL, till I seen its TENNESSE AFTERGLOW. its a very pretty one. and SILOAM DOUBLE CLASSICE IS one of my favorite. Love it. haha I love your TOMATOE JUNGLE. I dont think it looks like a jungle.I like it, dont see no red tomatoes in it yet, but, they would be hard to see in there.Your converted veggie garden is looking good. before long you will have it packed full, too, and eating veggies out of it.Hows the potted tomatoes doing? jean

mantis- Sam Abell didn't do much last year but sure looks like it is going to be fabulous from now on. I just loved todays flower. Debra- Not as high a percentage already in bloom as you might think. I forgot to add about dividing the daylilies. If you look at that first picture of the slope it is one of my big projects. I moved so many of my daylilies, that is how I made that slope. I took clumps from the plateau in the back and planted them there on the slope. I couldn't buy new daylilies which come in the usual two fans or so as I had the have ones that were already in clumps. That slope is too steep to do any other way. I couldn't put them further away and wait for it too fill in as the soil would have washed away. Then I just mulched with straw in between which I remulch each spring and fall. Works great. And I love the way it looked. The next spring after the first planting I did the last (most bottom) row. Then after moveing them to the slope, I replanted the plateau which was empty with daylilies that I moved from here and there in the garden that were not clumped up enough for the slope but of course fine on level ground. It was all so much work I was exhausted by the end of summer. But it ended up great!

Jean and Val, I always grow tomatoes as the home grown ones taste so much better than the ones from the store. I used to grow a lot more of them when I had more room but those darn daylilies take over more and more of the yard.

Jean, that must be a tomato hornworm, horrid things eat up tomato plants overnight if you don't notice them.

Your tomatoes look really good & healthy. I have been getting lots of tomatoes this last week. I tried Rutgers tomatoes this year, they seem small. Maybe it is their nature, but there are lots of tomatoes & they taste great. So nice to have home grown tomatoes!
I pulled out my 4 o'clocks because they got too big for the space I had them. I have to be sure & plant some somewhere next year, my hummingbirds are missing them. Lovely pond!

Nancy, I love my home grown tomatoes. I have a bunch of them sitting on the kitchen counter and eat some with all sorts of things each day. Some times I just eat the tomatoes by themselves as a snack. I love the flaver. I have afew different types as I bought one plant of each but now I can't remember what kinds they are. I don't do anything to the tomatoes at all. Just pick the fruit and sometimes trim a branch sticking out onto the pathway.
