trying to ID this grass / sedge

I bought this in the fall a couple of years ago and it was growing in the planter on my deck. Last spring I moved it into my hosta bed, and it's doing very well there. Of course, I lost the tag. I even took pics to the nursery where I bought it, but they were clueless. Any ideas?

no idea, i thought litrope (sp?) at first but not after that second pic. pretty cool looking but i have no clue you may want to try one of the other forums (maybe grasses but i doubt that also)

Kimm, up until the last two years - I would have agreed with you on the areas that nutsedge frequents. Here in the middle of the US it has become the biggest problem that we face daily. I have a very lush, green thick back yard and just this year it is becoming infested with nutsedge. Garden ditto, all neighbors - ditto. Every property we maintain has the problem to some degree now. Most gardens and landscapes unless thoroughly mulched 2-4" thick - ditto. Downtown Ditto. Farmers fields - some but not to the degree we are seeing in the city and semi rural areas. I don't like spraying chemicals, but only have two that knock it down for the season, and even then it seems to return the next year with a vengeance. I have noticed that in the last two years, the "nuts or tubers" as some cal them, are 5-10 times more plentiful than when we first started treating this pest 6 or 7 years ago. I'm at a loss. TiMo

Name this grass? and a sedge please

The grass reminds me of Oryzopsis asperifolia. The female spikes on the sedge are way too long for Carex pensylvanica, the leaves are too wide, and the habitat is wrong. Thought it looked like C. scabrata at first but it's not that either. Best way to get an ID is wait for the spikes to mature and then key it out.

Lately I've been trying to id grasses and sedges...this looks like a sedge....are the stems triangular, i.e. with edges? Sedges have edges! I'm sure someone else will narrow down the possibilities! You could google Carex ( sedge genus) and see if it looks like any of these.

Yes, muhly grass was a seed fail for me this year but will have to try again. I do have anemanthele lessoniana, aka pheasant's tail grass, along with a few other stipas (all well-behaved grasses) which grow amongst the ground covering and species roses - 1 especially like to grow mutabilis as a tall perennial rather than a bushy shrub....but I am less keen on attempting grasses with the large gallicas, portlands or HMs since the clumpiness of the roses militates against the airy freeflow of grasses....and I also do not care to see large double rose blooms near the finer, looser grasses. The little millium,effusum, Bowles golden grass, looks well with hardy geraniums and foxgloves in a wilder part of the garden (that would be all of mine), growing well with sanguinea and Sophie's Perpetual (tall and twiggy chinas)......so yes, I do like to grow ornamental grasses with roses but avoid the larger pennisetums, miscanthus or arundos in favour of deschampsia, molinia or even calamagrostis (although not as keen on this upright plumey grass).

That's definitely not any liriope / lilyturf that I've ever seen.

I don't know about the Star of Bethlehem. The photos at DavesGarden don't show any furriness on the blades. But maybe you should go look at the flowers and see.

I always wondered what that early spring plant was and now I know it is Star of Bethlehem that I have in my garden. I learn something new every time I visit the HF!

Hmmmm....I really don't think it's Star of Bethlehem based on the hairs on the blades.

I ment that the plants I have are now id'd and are Star of Bethlehem not the plant in the photo! Was it ever correctly id'd your grass I mean?

Hello everybody from Germany.
I have been lurking around for serveral months, but now I have registered to offer my help.
I think the pics show the Snowy Wood-rush (Luzula nivea), which at least here in europe is often used to enlighten shady places with its white flowers.

Definately not Star of Bethlehem, which I have in my garden. Each flower is an inch in size.
