Anyone order from Cottage Gardens, upstate NY?

I'm thinking of ordering from there since it's in the north and they have a good rating on Garden Watchdog. I'm a little hesitant because when I emailed them my list to see if they were available they were ALL available - which never happens to me. Usually at least a few have been sold out. I know, I know, what the heck it doesn't mean anything. Plus, they happen to have Betty Ford for $30 whereas other places start at $40 for it.

Anyway, if anyone has ordered from them, your experience with them would greatly help me decide.

Brent Ross owns Cottage Gardens, and I have bought from him many times over the past several years. He has always sent me good quality plants, and nice bonus plants too. I've been very happy doing business with him. Someone on this forum visited his garden recently and posted pictures from their visit, but I forget who it was.

I think I would take more into consideration what kind of room your have around your container garden. Hybrid teas are really easy to grow in pots because you prune them down to green wood each spring. Rugosas and other Hardy roses you don't prune will just get bigger and bigger on you and not be good for a pot soon. As far as cold goes, If your containers are large enough, and you can protect them from wind and sun scald, I think you will do fine. My mom grows her roses in pots in zone 4. She pushes them over to a fence for wind protection and throws straw over them making a mound. She loses few roses- no more than anyone growing them in the ground in zone 4. her pots are 20" or so. Be sure to water them until the ground freezes. Drying out and severe temp changes are the hardest things to survive. (going for balmy 50s to single digits in a day or 2 can kill a rose). I am in 5 b and I had a dozen roses overwinter just fine in little 3 or 5 gallon pots this winter (several were bands from last year- several were Austins). I ran out of time creating a new bed for them. I just dragged them to the foundation of my house in the most protected corner and throw pine needles on them. I lost zero (tho our winter was not harsh at all). I have 3 that live in ceramic pots (24") and they have managed 3 years that way. I make sure they are able to receive moisture (rain, snow) by not putting them under the eaves. If you can find them, I recommend own root roses. Northland Rosarium carries roses for our zone and they are all own root and they have all kinds. They are bands... but they catch up in year 2 or 3 to the other HTs. I have a 2 year old Stephen's big purple that looks almost as big as the other older plants. I recommend him. I have several Austins both grafted and own root. I think I would pick the Austins that are least likely to have an octopus habit (no Gertrude Jekyll, no Abe darby). Lady Emma Hamilton, Jude the Obsure, Tamora, Tradescant are the ones I have that I think would be good in a pot. I was thinking about getting Princess Alexandra of Kent and Young Lycidus for a pot too. I am planning to grow Baronne Prevost, Madame Isaac Pereire and a few other old garden roses in pots next year. I think they should do fine. (I would avoid polyanthus, chinas, most musks) Buy what you like and give it your best shot is my advice. I was just thinking - there is a long time poster here who lives in zone 4 and she grows so many many roses and does not winter protect and they do fine. Not to worry Kathy. We have many members in New York. Some flimsy containers might collapse under heavy snow, but milk jugs hold up very well. lblack's were buried under 7 ft. of the white stuff last winter. I'm sure she'll come along to reassure you. A picture of some of mine (milk jugs) under snow. Winter temperature doesn't matter- frozen is frozen no matter what the temp. You might have to give a little protection to tender things in late spring frosts, like throw a blanket over them. I do that here in Ohio, too. Welcome to the forum and wintersowing. I ordered from them last year and the daylilies were great! I got huge healthy many fan divisions that are doing well and blooming away in my garden now. I asked them for extra fans for a bonus and because they sent so many of two of the daylilies I have two large groupings of the bonus fans. Plus they STILL sent me a bonus plant even with all the extra fans sent.

I like to think of mel's mix as the "ideal", as in, if money isn't an issue this is the way to max out ounces per square. However the reality is many of us do tons of compost and stopped making the mel's mix long ago. If you do less (or even no) ver. in your beds it should be fine, just put in really good compost.

I have mail ordered from them also. Sent fantastic plants. I had said that I preferred extra fans as a bonus. Since I gave him the choice, he must have picked two plants he had lots of and those extra fans just kept on coming. This is a great place to buy from, you will not be dissapointed.

I think a couple of us from the GW traveled to Cottage Gardens this summer, I did, and I live in NE Ohio. More than worth it. Brent was very nice and helpful,
My sister in law and I both wanted Jungle Beauty,
but he only had about five small fans left, He gave me two fans for free and threw in the sign. Then, he took about a 25% discount off my total order and he gave us seedling clumps for no charge.!!!!! His gardens by the house are beautiful, and out in the field everything was well labeled. He dug many up himself along with ,I think, a nephew who was helping. We are going to make this a yearly trip. I say go for it, his daylilies are healthy and he is very helpful and generous. We went

thanks so much! I wish I lived close to make the trip! I can only get 3 for now, but I'm really excited to find another good company to order from. I'm getting San Ignacio, Mountain Almond, and Susan Weber. I also mentioned 3 for bonuses that are cheaper ones. I'll let everyone know when they arrive!

Hi Natanya,
If you went to GardenWatchdog, you saw my post. I also posted on here earlier this year with pics of my trip. The link below is to that post. Brent runs a great business. July was the coldest we've ever had here and it rained a lot! I'm betting his summer sales were slower because if it which would explain him having everything you want.

Yup, and Brent is terrific. Still haven't visited yet and his daylily farm is only 1 hour away. Got to remedy that. Ordered about 6 plants last winter and planted them this spring.
