I think I over-pruned my basil. [brand new at this]
Comments (3)To add to what others have said, trimming off only 1/3 of the living plant material (esp. the leaves) is the general rule of thumb to harvesting plant material or pruning if you intend for the plant to recover and continue to grow. I would suggest starting new seeds with increased lighting. FataMorgana...See MoreWhat kind of Basil is this?
Comments (2)Agreed, thai basil. So long as the plants were not hybrid varieties, your saved seeds should be relatively true to the parent. Many of the thai varieties I've seen are open pollinated so the seeds from this may work out better than the other basil varieties you've been saving from. Can't wait to see how much more it flourished after I give it the proper TIC! This was also her ex-boyfriends so that might be why she hates it! But she couldnt bare to throw it away since it was alive!...See MoreType of basil sold in grocery stores?
Comments (8)I think the growing conditions impact the flavor more than the breed, for most kinds. One exception is Dwarf Greek, which has a lemon kind of taste to it. I'm growing several kinds this year (Cinnamon, Anise, Licorice, Spicy Globe Bush, Genovese, Sweet, Lettuce Leaf, Large Leaf Italian, Purple Ruffles, Dwarf Greek, and maybe others), and the taste is about the same for most of them, although they taste a lot better now than they did earlier in the season when it was cooler. Now smell is another matter. Some of those smell pretty different. My Lettuce Leaf isn't true to type. The Sweet basil I mentioned was probably just a generic sweet basil sold as such. The packet wasn't more specific than calling it sweet basil. This is the second time I've grown Spicy Globe Bush. I was convinced it had a unique basil taste last year, but upon growing more basil I'm not so sure. I planted what was supposed to be Lime basil, but it looks like another species. (Maybe horsemint seeds got in the container.) I'm growing wild basil, but it is another species (and it's supposed to be). It's a perennial. It doesn't have a strong basil smell, though....See MoreCaraRose
