Root rot! But I may have saved it...

Newbie to gardening and daylilies. I haven't caught the obsession yet, but I made a classic newbie mistake with my Destined to See daylilies.

I bought two bare root specimens on sale from an online vendor. I planted them behind hostas and watered them furiously because they appeared not to grow (I know, the idiocy of that now!)

When they failed to thrive I dug up mushy brown roots :(

There was no odor and some roots still looked whitish and firm. In my plant "nursery" I pulled off all the mush, soaked them in bleach and water for a day, dried them on the deck for a day in the sun and potted them up in fresh moist potting soil. I cut the top green down to two inches and then I left them alone, minimal water.

Now I see new green growth!!! The green tops are firm and healthy looking. I want to overwinter them in the pot because I'm afraid to have them leave the "nursery". I'm also afraid to take them out of the pot and look at the roots for fear I'll disrupt some delicate process going on.

Any suggestions? I think this is a success story!
