Dusting of Snow and Black Friday

We had a dusting of snow come down Wednesday night and woke up to it Thanksgiving morning. It's still here this morning.

The hostas still aren't completely dried out so they will have to wait till spring to be cleared off. Time has run out for me to get everything done.

I, who NEVER get up for the Black Friday Crunch, climbed out of bed at 5:00 AM along with H and were at our local Wally World at 5:20 to get a GPS gaget. Welllll, They were gone(sale item, had lots of others more expensive) by the time we got there so headed over to Staples (opened at 6:00) to wait in line. I, after a few minutes, headed back to the car to wait(it was a toasty 27 degrees outside) as I didn't want to get sick before my impending surgery on Monday.

At 6 the doors opened and 250 people rushed in to find their sale items. I got out of the car and politely waited for the end of the line because who knows what might have happened to me if I had crashed the line. I had lost H so went to look for him and finally found him with a GPS gaget in hand! He had had 2 but after looking them over he gave one to the man in line behind him,(found out later that he gave away the better buy item!) I told him to take his reading glasses!!!

So, as I sit in my warm house and relive my experiences I know why I only venture out on this crazy shopping day once every 10 years!!

I did not do any real shoping but I did stop by a thrift store on my way to go train horses and OH my stars! I got 46 decor magazines! all this year! some are even out right now for five bucks! I can't wait to go thro them all and dream!

My friend made me meet her at the mall at 6am, because she was hoping Macy's had her Department 56 penguin stuff on sale. Turned out they don't even carry them anymore. Last year our Macy's was still a Marshall Fields and that's who carried them.

Then we ventured into the mall. Everything was fine until we tried to get into Target. The lines were from the front of the store all the way to the back and then they were wrapped around the aisles in the back. They must have had a huge deal on LCD tvs, because everyone had huge flat screen tvs in their carts. It was a mad house. So then we left the mall and went to Big Lots, where I actually found a ton of stuff and no one was there. I was home by 8:30am. Never again!

Hi hostaholic2! I did get them planted last Saturday-- finished just as the snow started to fall. The ground was still workable so I had no issues.

Here, I plant out the frost-sensitive stuff the 1st week of June. But all of May, I collect a huge amount of grass clippings and stockpile them by the veggie garden, so when we get a forecast below freezing, I go out and make a huge heap of clippings all around the tomatoes, peppers, and eggplant. I'd say I have to do it every other year. Then there was that one year, we got down to 17Âº on June 22nd, and in spite of everything I did, it all froze off, but I managed a decent harvest anyway. But that was the year the acorns froze, and the bears decided that the local 'hood was way easier to find food in than up in the hills, and a resident population is now firmly established.

We had a great time shopping in San Marcos on Friday. Got some great bargains. There were so many mark downs plus x% off plus an additional percentage off before noon, etc. I LOVE the pottery barn outlet store. They always have some wonderful deals. I bought a very pretty cut glass salad bowl with the matching individual bowls, original price for the large bowl was $30 and with the discount I thought it was gong to ring up as $12. It rang up at $7.97. With similar price cuts on the individual bowls, it was just too cheap not to get a second set to give as a gift so I had her ring up extras and ran back an got more. This same scenario has happened to me multiple times at that store. Bought a bunch more stuff, some needed, much not needed but all great deals. Then we went to dinner at a local steak place and that's where the trouble started. I got food poisoning. I started feeling bad about an hour into the drive home and ended up unswallowing all night and into the next morning. Ugh. Slept most of the day Sat and Sun, and although I'm at work today, my stomach and surrounding muscles are still sore and tender today. This morning on NPR, they had a story about the San Marcos outlets! The stores opened at midnight TG (we arrived at 845 am) and apparently there were MILES of cars waiting in line to get in. Most of that had cleared out by the time we arrived as we were able to get a parking space without much effort. I do love to shop, but waiting in that kind of traffic, no thanks! I think we have it timed just right!

Made a big lunch of what leftovers were worth eating, had a piece of pie and a cup of coffee, sat in the chair in the library and rested/snoozed on and off for an hour. Just now filled the bird feeders and got the mail out of the box. It's sunny but with a cool breeze here. I received a catalog from The Swiss Colony. I haven't seen a catalog of theirs in years but can remember browsing through all the pages of food gift boxes of meats, cheeses, and desserts. Might be worth checking out for Christmas gifts this year if they packages would arrive in time.

I woke up at 7, thought 'wow some people were waiting at Kohl's when it opened 3 hours ago', rolled over and went back to sleep for another hour :-)

I finally did venture out about 2 pm and bought several items, the most unusual (for me) being a roomba vacuum cleaner. My son had called earlier, saying that Big Lots had them for $100 off, he and his wife had bought one, and that his inlaws have one and use it all the time. I've done practically the whole house with it today and it did a pretty good job.

Otherwise, a hard drive and dvd drive. The HD to replace the crashed one in my desktop pc :-( and some half off Christmas stuff at Hobby Lobby.

Told my son I'd have saved a lot of money if he hadn't called me about the Roomba!

We woke up around 8am (hubby actually had the day off!) and pondered what to do with our free day.
About 11am we decided to head over to a neighboring town that has a mall and several other places we like to shop. We weren't looking for anything in particular, so there was no pressure, lol.

We were actually surprised by the abundance of parking places available. I guess everyone was there at 4 or 5am and had already departed, but it made it nice for us and we did get a few items, had a nice lunch and took a drive along the river on the way home and saw a bald eagle, so it was a good day!
