Dill covered with lice... help needed for the caterpillars
Comments (3)Plant lice are typically called aphids, and they sure can be a problem when you don't want to use anything to control them! I'm afraid that you are stuck with having to use plain water to wash them off, as well as some squishing. The eggs are stuck on the plants fairly securely. I think that they would survive a gentle shower with the hose. A few days of rinsing and squishing, and your plants will be alot happier, I think. As far as next year goes, be sure to inspect your plants regularly so that you can nip an aphid infestation in the bud (so to speak) before it gets out of hand. A few dozen of those critters are easier to get rid of than a few zillion. This is absolutely the right forum to visit in order to get some help for this special situation. Even totally 'organic' aphid control measures can be harmful to caterpillars and eggs. I hope that others will jump in with their helpful suggestions, too....See MoreGreen Caterpillar that is a Brown Moth on my Dill
Comments (1)You're asking for a personal opinion, but IMHO, I would dispose of them, except maybe 1 or 2 if you're interesting in raising them. Sometimes I get that crazy idea to raise a strange moth, not knowing what it will look like when it makes a cocoon and emerges. Sometimes I don't - like right now when most of the fennel is gone! LOL! If you have lots of fennel or dill to share, it's really up to you if you want to allow them to eat. If the moth you believe it is, is a small one, they probably won't eat much. Good luck and let us know how it progresses! Susan...See Moresmall caterpillars eating all my leaves!!
Comments (1)I'm not sure if they're "Army Worms" or what, maybe an expert will tell us. I had them too, mostly eating my bush green bean and occasionally eating into a tomato. BT(Bacillus Thuringiensis) seemed to mostly bring them to a halt for me....See MoreWhat could be eating my dill plants?
Comments (12)Where do you live? My squirrels don't chew stem tops. They want acorns. Other pests must be your problem? Maybe you should try beer traps and see what kind of bugs may be the culprits? The caterpillars don't go there, but slugs, snails, pill bugs, and earwigs do. I have heard fake owls work if you move them around. Also pieces of old hoses that look like snakes. And the more you plant, the bigger the buffet and the less you will notice the damage. Plant more wildflower seeds. I have many butterflies on coreopsis, yarrow, purple coneflowers, zinnias, brazilian verbena, etc. Asclepias,/butterfly weed / milkweed is the attractor of monarchs. I have a resident rabbit (at least one) and plenty of squirrels and bugs. My dog and a neighborhood cat leave their scent in my yard. And I use a couple of beer traps. But every few days I find something chewed. Latest was rudbeckia. I am waiting for foxes to deal with my rabbits. But i let the violets and clover and yarrow grow for the rabbit buffet. I consider myself lucky, so far, this year. But my patio peach tree, up high in a huge pot has been stripped of her leaves. I think slug or bug damage? I Must do the beer trap for that one too....See MoreHeathen1
