Munched dill, any hope?

So over the weekend, a critter (I'm suspecting a big buck I've seen around, since he's the only one tall enough to nibble the tips of my big lovage) came thru and made a snack of my young dill, parsley and some of my lovage (the only thing I've got enough of to share!). The parsley's gonna be fine, but of the three dill, only one is showing any new growth. He chomped them all within an inch of the ground. Another, the only leaf left dried up, and I think it's good and dead. And the third has a leaf left, but it's browning at the edges and there's no regrowth.

Is there anything I can do, or am I just down to one dill plant for the year? :/

PS: Scent marking the garden now, hopefully it'll keep him out. Strange he didn't so much as touch the basil...

Bummer! Oh big bummer! I don't know much about deer... I have never had that problem... though I could loan you some chicken wire. :o) I'd THINK that it'd come back next year... you might get some back... hard to say, never harvested dill down that far. :o) but thinking in terms of storing energy from the leaves, I'd think that it'd grow back.... how young was young? Is it several months old?

Just about two months since they sprouted... They were about 4 inches tall.

That's encouraging, Orchids2000, thank you! And yes, hoovb, the deer would be back were it not for regular applications of Liquid Fence, or in my case, Deer Out, which is a similar product. For a few nights now, i've been thinking i need to re-apply since it's been some time and a few rain falls. The lack of damage lulled me into a false sense of security! Now i know better and will be more diligent ... :)

Jim, so glad to see you post again. I really have missed your quick wit. The only problem I have had is with BIG green worms, those Texans worms. can destroy a large brugmansia in few days, I can only find them in the evenings, when it is almost dark. I take a flashlight and just pick them off the back side of the eaten leaves. I don't think the brugmansia effect them in any way, except make them fat. Barbra,

Ken - I have one fairly decent dill plant - (I was drooling over your picture of them), but will settle for what I can get. As my pickles are almost gone - I just fermented the last half-gallon a few days ago - so think I will gather some fresh seeds from that one dill plant and do a little "wild" sowing. (Imagine that - sowing wild oats - er - dill - at my age too). Ken were you able to get any plants in at all after that nasty rainy weather? My summer stuff is about fried - after a couple of hot afternoons - except for some sorry looking cherry toms and about 8 - 10 assorted peppers - 2 of which went through a winter dormant period - hot types I think. So - I'm taking a breather until September, when the fruit will be coming ripe in the local mountain fruit stands. Then hope to "do" a lot of juice - apples, peach, pears in jars. Squeezed another 2 pints of kraut in - now fermenting in the pantry, along with some zucchini pickles. Just my 2 c's. Bejay

Thanks Dawn, I figured it was a long shot since its pretty generic damage. I haven't seen a single "bad guy" except a few flea beetles in the beginning and an earwig or two. No white flies (yet) or cucumber beetles. I'll just keep an eye out. I finally took the row cover off, hopefully more pests don't show up! Ha Hazel you're too funny. There's no magic I'm afraid. But thanks to you and Bon for the compliment! I use a heat mat to germinate, then a speed rack with florescent lights from Lowe's. Nothing fancy. I started them way too early along with everything else like beginning of Feb I think? I'm not sure. They got big and leggy under my lights, but I planted deep, covered with garden fabric, and hoped for the best! I really figured we would have cold enough weather to kill them but I just got lucky this year. I bought a plant once from TLC, but didn't realize you need more than one for pollination so it just grew, flowered, and nothing.. so I gave up until I figured out my mistake. I'm hoping this is my year because I'm dying to make some salsa Verde!

And I gave my backups away...

Well, my grandmother has one if I REALLY need dill, I guess.

The one that was still growing yesterday looked all dry today... I gave it some water, but it doesn't look good. :(

Replant with seed. Depending on how cheap the dill in the spice area is buy a small jar or package and plant the seeds one dill plant is not enough for you and any butterfly larva to eat. Your dill should have been taller than four inches by now.

You might be able to still find some of the 10 for $1.00 packages of dill. I find them offen at my Osco or hardware store.

I've still got seed, but Wal*Reich has fernleaf seeds this year in case I need them.

I use so much Dill that I reseed several times a year. About every 4 weeks. The last batch I let go to seed for the following year.
