A second year seedling in evaluation bed

We we are torn what to do with this one and right now just hybridizing it with some taller stuff; because the rest of the plant is very nice.

Alittle short for my liking (23"), but has 3 laterals plus the terminal Y. BC over 25, but somewhat crowded due to the short scape. Opens with no problems in the mid to hi 50's.

How many would buy a short plant like this?

It's super gorgeous, floriferous, nicely-branched, wonderful opener and perfect near the front of the border!

I plant my beds 3 dl's deep tall ones in back, med ones in middle and short one's in front. I have empty spots in front just waiting for shorts. Most shorts are mini's but I'm looking for bigger blooms. Expensive Tastes is a 6 in bloom but is on a short scape. I bought it for hybridizing and was glad it was short, filled in one of my front spots.

You didn't mention the diameter on this one. I would be tempted to buy it for hybridizing, because of the bud count and branching and you said the rest of the plant is nice. Not to mention it is a beautiful flower. It would have a front row seat in my garden.

Well...I asked over on the Forum 'Name That Plant' and someone identified it as a Linden Tree. I haven't seen any of those in our whole neighborhood and there is a good 20 of them all over my front bed. We added mulch last fall and the only thing I can think of is that the seeds were in the mulch. There is a link below showing what a Linden Tree seedling looks like. Garlic Chives the second year

Garlic chives are perennial, and will grow into a massive clump if you let it. Give some to friends! The taste loss may be because your soil is too fertile. Herbs like to live on the lean side and fertilizing/rich soil can affect the taste. Hope you get completely over your cold!

as new seedlings only display one leaf when they first appear...for the remainder of the season. (Is this correct, Ken?) ==>> i dont think this is an absolute ... under lights.. you can get from seed to flower and more seed in side a year ... but thats in perfect conditions ... many seedlings are NOT in perfect conditions.. under plants.. dry.. no sun.. etc ... so they mostly stay rather puny ... this one was out in the path.. so lots of light .... probably rain.. etc ... its only job year one.. is to grow roots... for next year ... so even if it stays small.. whatever root mass it can grow.. dictates how big it will be year two ... if you stop cleaning your beds.. and leave the flower stalks there all winter.. you will start getting a lot of seedlings ... which can become a real problem ... ken

I also have spots where I prefer shorter daylilies & prefer larger flowers. That is a beautiful flower, I'm also interested in the size of the flower.

It's very pretty. I tell myself that I don't care for large blooms on short scapes, as the proportions seem off to me. Frequently though, when touring gardens, I like the shorter ones just fine. However, a crowded scape's another thing altogether. Do you have any images of the scape, with a bloom or blooms trying to open?

At any rate, the issue for me wouldn't be the short scape, it would be possible crowding of the blooms, particularly if the crowding made it difficult for some blooms to open fully or to be seen well.

But it's still very, very pretty!

This has always been an interesting topic to me. Scape height is very hard to evaluate here at least in my particular situation. I have over 300 registered CV's here. I went out and measured a bunch of them at random a few minutes after I read your post and the bulk of them are not showing scape height any where near what you see on the AHS registry. Linda Beck averages 20" here. Warrior Victorious is 23". Orchid Gilded Ruffles is true to the AHS description of 18" but one of the few that comes up to the registered specs. Red Friday is 21" here. My lilies are atleast 2 years of age and most are between 3 and 7 years of age. They are fertilized and well maintained yet I almost never see the scape height that is stated in the registry. The only exception I see to this are the daylilies hybridized by Jamie Gossard, and some of Karol Emmerich's. When anyone wants to see Jamie's plants I just tell them to look for the ones on the flag poles....those will almost always be Jamie's plants. Maybe you should send some of that lily to a southern living friend and see what the scape height goes to in the next growing season. You might be surprised.

I think it's fab,and it opens in cool weather too! I agree, the shorter scape just means it goes in the front of the bed. Unless the blooms are down in the foliage, I'm not into blooms in the foliage.

You can't have every dl the same size?! There are dls that are meant to be in the back & some that are meant to be in front of the border. In my mind, it has to be darn right outstanding to be in the front, which makes it that more difficult. If you have a rock star that is short by all means go for it. Right now, I am extraordinarilly impressed w/ Belle Cook for front of the border, not much else. The looks of yours is very unique & beautiful...go for it!
