Basil plant dying from base up

I bought my basil plant about 3 month ago; when I bought it it was very small about 3 stems with few leaves now it is about a 2 foot bush. I have it in a 2 maybe 3 gallon pot. It seemed to be doing well, it flowered a few weeks ago but now itÂs dying, turning brown at the base and moving upward, I watered it about once to twice a day only because it is so hot (but humid) here if I donÂt water it in the morning when I get home from work it is withering. I have the type of pot that has a spout at the bottom that lets you see how much water is in the base. Usually if I water it in the morning when I get home the spout is dry and a may water it depending if it looks like it will rain, the past week itÂs been raining. So I donÂt think IÂve been over water the plant but I am very new to gardening, I think maybe I need A bigger pot but If I transplant it will it live with the base dying or is it too late? Could it be something else? Please help I donÂt want my plant to die.
