Scott, I think you'd be really pleased with the DWN stock at Peaceful Valley. I've placed 5 orders (about 35 trees) from Peaceful Valley and can confirm that they normally only prune the roots very minimally. In fact, their trees have the largest root systems I've ever received from any nursery. I've only placed one order with Sanhedrin this year for 2 peach trees and one had very pruned roots (all to about 5-6") and the other had minimal pruning. I was still pleased with my Sanhedrin order and would still use them again for DWN varieties not offered at PV, but neither of the 2 peach trees approached the huge root system of those I received from PV. Plus, PV is an incredible value to boot. I don't know of any other non-wholesale source you can get 5/8-3/4", 4-5' healthy stock for about $20-23 a tree, shipped.

I bought a fig this past year. A local nursery grows them along with many other plants and sells them as bareroot stock. I like to go to the end-of-the-season bareroot stock sales - the price is so RIGHT. Since it is already getting rather warm to plant bareroot, dormant plants, I pot them up and baby them through the summer and plant them in the fall. I have better successes that way. Rather than plant my fig I moved it to an unheated porch when the frosts came. I'll plant it come spring and cover for next winter. I included the link to the brown turkey fig the local nursery sells figs they grow here since they do mail order too. If it grows here in frozen western NY state, it should do well in much warmer areas. I grow tumeric in a pot. It's a just because plant. The roots can't get to any good size in a pot plus at least a 6 month dormant period - it goes dormant the moment it gets chilly and doesn't wake for me until summer is in full-swing. for many classically difficult to propagate species, when attempting to root cuttings, there is often some benefit to be gained by generating warmth below the roots. this can be done in any number of way- including, but not limited to burying fresh compost a significant distance below the root zone of the soil, and placing pots on a pile of hot compost, or above a current of warm air. due to the danger of mold involved in bay propagation, compost may or may not be risky. in a possibly more direct practice, rooting may be encouraged with the use of willow. the dry leaves may be crushed and mixed in with the planting medium, or applied as a mulch. a tea can also be brewed hot or cold of the fresh or dried leaves(let to cool if brewed hot). also-i may add that this is my preference- the fresh or dried leaves and stems of willow may be placed in a large watertight container with half their volume of water, and allowed to ferment for anywhere from 3-180 days before using the tea to assist in root development. for shorter brewing times, an addition of no more than 1% of any variety vinegar can be added to assist in the process. if willow is not readily available in your location this point may be of no use. the fermented tea of willow is comparable in its effectiveness to commercial rooting hormone, but is not petroleum derived, and does not stimulate root growth by mutating existing cell tissue into a state of rooting, but by encouraging new root tissue cells to grow from existing tissues. again, due to the common dependance of bay cuttings on high humidity and the risk of mold to their success, the fermentation or direct application methods may not provide maximum effectiveness.
