White Wings Hibiscus - is it dead?

Hi all,

I got a yellowing white wings hibiscus (they were going to throw it out) about a month ago that I wanted to try and bring back. I re-potted it into a larger pot and watered it, but the leaves kept yellowing and falling off. Ultimately I think I ended up over watering it, and the sticks/branches went brown and dry. I gave it up for lost and left it alone for about 3 weeks on the back porch without water. I went to dig it out today to use the pot for another plant, and discovered the roots still seem to be "damp". The sticks/branches are still dry though; is there any hope that this plant might come back, or is it gone for good?

What is the soil mixture..and there is always hope..your hibiscus might just be presently in a dormant state due to shock,..Id make real sure your soil mix is good...perlite and moss for good drainage yet some moisture retention..there are also other soils that say they have a soil that retains moisture without basically remaining soaked..mixed with perlite and moss a good amt and a bit of mild food boost to it and then sun lots of sun...sit and be patient..trim back as u didnt say how much branch length there is but a trim may also help build strength to the plant ...remember a plant is only as strong and healthy as ITS ROOTS..so many forget this..even if bugs infest a plant ..if the roots are strong and healthy it will come back..good luck its worth the extra patience and better soil.

Hibiscus don't like wet feet or too much moisture in the soil. Otherwise, they will die or root rot. That's guaranteed.

As summerbreezes mentioned, add perlite to your soil medium. Perlite will easily drain water in seconds. But in the summer months you need to mulch your plant to lock in moisture. If you are using garden soil, your perlite should not be less than 20%. For me this is enough, but for some people they prefer 30% (70% soil medium + 30% perlite).

If your plant does not survive, graft its branches so you can grow it again. Check out Wally Morgan's website on grafting hibiscus.

there really isnt a question here ... just a bunch of facts .... frankly .. after 25 years of garden plants dying ... i never can really understand why any given plant died ... so i move on ... blame it on the neighbors ... the weather... the government.. whatever ... time to move on ... without an ID of the long gone insects... we have nowhere to go on diagnosis ... sorry for you loss.. good luck on its replacement ... ken

I was TRYING to get a better description from Carol regarding those little flies. I was thinking in terms of the Long Legged flies, which are pretty little iridescent insects....often green, but can be blue, gold, or other colors. I'll attach an image. They are beneficial. "small, orange, egg looking things" is a difficult description to go by. Do your own search on Milkweed Aphid and decide if that's it. If not, let us know if they are insects or if they are eggs. ;-) The flies would be after the aphids, by the way. Here is a link that might be useful:

Hi KY girl, Are you still looking for a cold hardy gardenia, I know its been several months since you posted this, but in case you haven't found one, I just purchased two from Lowe's. Its "Miami Supreme" variety and the tag says although not to 0 degrees but hardy (20 to 10 degrees). If you go to this website: Lowes.com/plants Click on plant search and type in L7109, under the plant tag code number and it will give you some of the plants specifications, I know it's not zero degrees but might work out for you if you cover them really well when it gets below 20.Or pot them up and bring them in when its below that. But then I live in Florida and lucky for us it never gets that cold. These are my very first gardenias, so I am really new and have been reading all I can on how to take care of them properly. Cutting back brugmansias and angel wing begonia

The best place to prune a brugmansia is above the Y. It will have to grow less next year before it starts producing flower. But since a brugmansia produces blooms on new wood it will have to grow a new Y before it can start blooming next year. Mine died to the potting soil last year and that may not have been all bad. I had 2 trunks last year and it had 4 trunks this year which looked pretty perfect. I took some tip cuttings. This is a variegated plant which I guess is even more likely to rot and greenwood is more difficult anyway. So I am using chopped sphagnum moss and Turface, equal parts as a starting media and putting the cuttings in a covered pot together. If that doesn't work starting in water works for a lot of people. I don't like the long transition to soil. I think these plants might be water hogs. Last year this plant was in a different garden with an eastern exposure and was misted each morning. I had lots of leaves and if a worm ate a hole I just pruned off the leaf and a small leaf grew big to cover the spot in a few days. This summer it got plenty of water but no misting and the trunk did not re-grow it's leaves. It's a beautiful plant either way. As a multi branched tree there is room for bellowing Diamond Frost euphorbia and calibrachoa. Begonias are so easy to start I think I will just start over next year with the cuttings I took.
