buying a cheap computer want to use garden web more!

I am looking for a cheap computer. Anybody have any suggestions. I tried ebay without luck. What about all of these "old" computers from offices. How can I get ahold of one of them?

Are you close to a town large enough tohave a phone book? There are many Gap Computer franchises in small towns. Also there's something called "Everyday Solutions." These businesses set people up with whatever they need and can afford. Look for these or something similar. Otherwise drive into to nearest town to visit a Goodwill or a Salvation Army used goods place. Or check their phone books under "computers, used." My guess is a town of 5,000 or more will have a business like that. Good luck. -- Marie

My son buys used computers on ebay all the time, very cheap. They usualy need work. He buys them for parts and builds units out of them. He built my computer this way, with used parts, cost me $150.00. The computer works great and has alot of memory space. Keep looking, and look for a good computer tech to help you out. Most of the computers hes bought on ebay were from bussinesses.

Hello "GTF", What kind of seeds are you looking for? Flowers? Heirloom Veggies? If you are looking for Tomato Seeds and other vegetables I can name a few that are very reasonable and do not go crazy with S&H fees. One is Heirloom Vegetable Seed Warehouse. I have not ordered from them yet, but I plan to as soon as I take inventory and see what I need. Not the biggest selection but seeds range from .35 to .99 and shipping is reasonable for small orders. http://www.heirloomvegetableseedwarehouse.com/ Another one that seems to be very reasonable is Tradewinds. Again I have not ordered from them but a friend did and she was very happy with her seeds. Most of their seeds range from 1.00 to 1.50 and they charge .25 shipping for each item ordered and they have no minimum. I was going to order some Anasazi Beans (1 of only 3 places I could find them)but someone offered them to me in a trade a few days ago. They have a good selection of vegetables and lots of really interesting vines and flowers. http://www.tradewindsfruit.com And of course we can't forget about Sandhill. http://www.sandhillpreservation.com/Seeds.htm And the cheapest seeds on the net is Cheap Seeds, which I think is the discount outlet for Anioleka. .50 cents per pack with no shipping fees. OK, cheapskate: from a "value for the dollar" angle, I think a garden is one of the best investments you can make. I'm one of those over-analytical types, and last year I kept a harvest record in Excel from a "return on investment" perspective. I kept the costs in one column and the value of the vegetables we picked in the other. (It meant I had to weigh everything, of course, but I didn't mind the extra chore too much.) At the end of the summer I checked the totals. I spent approximately $100 on our small garden and got more than $800 in fresh veggies. I used grocery store prices...a couple of bucks for a pound of tomatoes, etc...and I realize that's not entirely an "apples-to-apples" comparison, since I grow organically. So ballpark $800 but probably a good bit more than that. Point is, though, that an 800% return on investment in six months is something any stockbroker would give his eyeteeth for, and it's enough to make a cheapskate like me very happy indeed. A flaw in that kind of analysis is obviously the time spent scrabbling around out there, but since I chalk that up under "play" instead of "work" I don't bother with it. Yeah, I could have made five bucks an hour flipping burgers or whatever, but given the choice... Ed

fwiw - I am having same problems for over a month. I posted on the "suggestions forum": safari problems/suggestions forum my last post there: UPDATE: I was okay for a day or two - but it's back to "400 Bad Request". mary4b's message prompted me to contact them again. I was willing to change browsers in order to access the site - not ideal, tho. It's a pain to claer cache (w safari) everytime I want access. What's most frustrating is when I follow a link from google and can't get in. if anyone else is having this issue, here's the email I received you can send the requested info to: Tamara.Amey@nbcuni.com "Hi there, You are receiving this email because you have reported problems accessing GardenWeb. I want to buy a cheap embroidery machine. Is there such a thing?

I have been counseled that a cheap embroidery only machine will annoy you in time, and you will use it a lot more than you expect, as we all know well. Free and cheap designs are widely available all over the web. A good combo machine (both my machines were good, bought used), according to Consumer Reports review three years ago, does the regular sewing tasks much better than a sewing-only machine, so it is not going to sit, no matter what. I can certainly sympathize with the economy, but it is better to wait and buy a better used machine than to spend maybe half that on a machine you come to hate and don't use. If you check your local sewing store (not a Joann, that has a sub contract with Viking for their larger stores), they usually have machines from people who have traded up just like buying a used car from a new car dealers trades. They often have all different brands, because they take anything in trade, and I have seen some incredible bargains in combo machines from Janome, Elna, as well as Babylock and Brother - at a time when I wasn't buying. Take your time about it, even if you have the bug, and check back often. You can get some real gems from trades.

Today ENRON is auctioning off hundreds of computers. Most will be on E-bay within a few days. You have to be present at the auction to get them, but there is not a lot of market in Houston for used, un-checked computers. In fact, there is a glut. My son bought a perfect laptop to take to college for $100. So people are buying here and taking them elsewhere to sell or puting them on E-bay. -- Marie

Here we have a local radio station that has a program called "the friendly show". People call in if they have anything for sale, something they're looking for to buy, lost or found animals, produce, etc. We also have a little free paper that lists the same sort of things. Check on something like that.

hey frank, go to walmart.com and you can buy a brand new linux machine (microtel running lindows os) that will do anything you want or need for all of $229. don't fall for the endless lines from those who have never owned nor lived with a mac or unix variant regarding how you just have to run windows just to stay alive.... they are all lies.... i have lived in a windows-less world for quite sometime and neither have i been "left behind", forced to "do without"' nor has the sky yet to fall. windows is a big waste of money if your intentions are to web surf, read/write mail, and check out news groups or play games.
