Thanks. Yes, it was indoors in a pot because it is too cold here to put into the ground. It passed on but, I do have a stem that I cut off before it had the problems. It seems to be doing well growing in an aquarium with artificial light. If it survives and grows large enough I'll do this again and grow small cuttings in the aquarium overwinter next year. It is weird that the others had no problems.

A month or two ago I purchased 2 tropical hibiscus from a home improvement center, both looked healthy and were full of blooms. I promptly re-potted them into 2 larger pots and all seemed well. A couple of weeks ago the trouble started. The first one is losing it's leaves, they are turning yellow and dropping and is looking straggly but is still blooming. The other is healthy looking and green, full of leaves but is not blooming anything like the other. My main concern right now is the straggly one. Before all the problems started I had given them both a bit of fertilizer, miracle grow type. I thought this may be a problem and really flooded the pot with water to try and wash out any fertilizer that may be remaining. Now the leaves have starting to wilt on top of all the other issues. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I have no idea what to do next. Thanks

Mike, The key to proper potting soil for tropical Hibiscus is one with a good amount of organic material but that drains well. According to Hidden Vally Hibiscus, a mix made up of coco coir, peat moss, or composted bark to hold moisture and nutrients, along with sand and/or perlite to provide more drainage is great. Added organic ingredients that support beneficial microbial life in the pot, such as worm castings, bat quano, or other fully composted organic material, are very beneficial in the potting mix. You can also go to a nursery or garden center in your area and asking for a high quality potting mix that drains well and contains some organic materials. I would also make sure to add mycorrhizae to insure that the roots are optimally set up to absorb nutrients. HV has a great potting mix they sell, btw. As far as the correct fertilizers, this can be hard to find, since hibiscus really do NOT like to get a lot of phosphorus, and this can be a hard fertilizer to find. You need one especially formulated for hibiscus. Hidden Valley makes an excellent product and their's is a 17-5-24 balance. You'd want to use 1/2 the recommended amount for potted plants. Again, HV has the perfect fertilizer. Not affiliated with them in any way, just that Charlie is extremely well known in the tropical Hibiscus world, and has developed some of the most well known hibiscus cultivars out there. un pot it, check the soil. dry, then water. soaking wet? change out soil that you can and don't water. ( water meter might help) give it a few days to dry out the middle of the root ball, then check soil and water when nearly dry...watch for new growth. Less leaves = less water. Also could be spider mites. they explode in dry climates. look for little fine webbing with spots or the mites on the back of the leaves. if you find them - you might want to treat.
