inside/outside best for overwintering in my zone?

My mother always leaves her hibiscus outside in the winter and it of course dies and buys a new one every year. She would like to avoid this cycle and wants to do something to help it survive.

It has been in the ground, not a pot all summer. Is it possible to bring it inside without destroying the root system?

Or, is there a way to protect it while leaving it in the ground? Our temps here can dip below 0. Although we live near a bay and are somewhat protected from typical zone 5 weather, we are definitely a Northern climate.

I had heard of building a cage of wire around the plant and filling cage with leaves to insulate. Is this a workable method?

I assume you are talking about tropical hibiscus. These plants will NOT survive even a zone 7 winter outdoors, to the best of my knowledge, even with winter protection. You can dig it up now, prune the top heavily, and pot it up. Do NOT bring it in at exactly the same time since it will be in shock. It will likely survive with few problems. It is probably a good idea to spray for insects before bringing it in for the winter. It will require a sunny position indoors. Grow in partial sun after you dig it up and pot it, and you will reduce or eliminate any shock when you bring it in for the winter. You can also take cuttings. I once asked someone in New York for a cutting from their large hibiscus which was in the ground, looking lovely in mid December. I still have that lovely plant. It was saved through my cutting, right before a killing freeze!

Not sure what the experts say on it...but,in my experience---it is not as hardy as the regular...I have it and almost lost mine last year...only a few came back that was really deep into the soil...so last fall I put it into a deeper pool...this year it came back with gusto....is the creek earth bottom or lined...if earth bottom then it should be able to go deep enough into the soil to protect it...if not then IMO your taking a chance...mind you this is just my opinion and how it has preformed for me in the last 5 years.... The last two years I simply wrapped mine in frost cloth if it was going to get really cold. Well, last year I didn't have to, but I was set up for it by inserting three poles in the ground ahead of time. When it got to 17 I wrapped it, only because it was tiny. Now mine is a good size and I'll leave it. A friend in the neighborhood grows it just fine, no problems at all being hardy in the ground and evergreen. I would say if it's small and can afford itself little protection, mulch well, and wrap if necessary only when it hits those cold temps. and it's small but leave it where it is. If it's large, don't worry about it!

Hi Winston, I've found it much easier to start Impatiens right where you want them to grow. Especially this late in the season. In fact here in z7 NC, it's quicker to start them in ground or planter, rather than starting them inside and transplanting them. Just pre-soak the dirt you're planting in, sprinkle the seeds on, and slightly rewater. Then keep them from completely drying out for 1-2 weeks and you're all set. A shady area works best of course. I find Impatiens seeds the easiest of all to germinate. I save my seeds from year to year - haven't bought new plants in over 10 years. Just pop the seed pod when ready, put them on a newspaper or something, and scrape out the seeds in a day when the pods are wilted a bit. Save them in a ziploc (just the seeds - no pods or they'll all mold) till next year. I usually get plenty of volunteers from year to year as well. Hope this helps! Alana

I would maybe try one out and pot the other one up an put in your garage. These are rated zone 8, I would prune them back, mulch them and cover them with a pot for some protection. Even after all of this I would be surprised if it came back for you. I have one of these that I keep in a pot and sink it in the ground in the spring and take it back out in the late fall,it does very well like this. Good luck and let us know how it works for you.
