I'm way warmer than you are but here's my experience for what it's worth. I've got a huge confederate jasmine (aka star jasmine, I believe) that's 5 years old in a large pot outside. The cold kills most of the outer leaves every winter but it makes new ones every spring. This wouldn't be the case for you, of course, and I mention it only because it's been living in a pot above ground all this time - not planted in the ground, so it is a toughie - up to a point - even though it's a "tropical". I've rooted it successfully a lot. If you can, get cuttings that are not woody - get ones where the vine is still green. Snip off all the leaves on the part you will stick in the dirt, wet it and dunk it in some rooting compound (at all garden stores and not expensive) and into a pot with just good potting soil. Leave only a few leaves on the cutting top. Cover the whole thing with a baggie and keep the soil moist in a spot inside (needs warm temps) that gets indirect but bright light. New roots will grow from the nodes where you snipped off the leaves. (If you tear the leaves off, you could damage the node.) I've also successfully rooted them without the rooting hormone, but using that stuff seems to make it work a little faster. The plastic baggie is to keep its environment damp to avoid stressing the cutting from transpiration/dryness.) Take a bunch of cuttings because not all will root, and you can stick more than one cutting in a pot. Good luck!

I have, and they're doing great. I did nothing special, other than bring them in during the winter. Probably even kept them too close to heating vents. I have 2 in 2-gallon pots, brought them in, kept them watered periodically, then put them outside this spring. They're on a sunny deck and although a bit slow to start really filling out after the winter, they're gorgeous and fragrant right now.

I bought a Star Jasmine at the beginning of this summer and repotted it into a large ceramic pot that I would say is about 20 gallon size. I had it on my deck getting morning sun all summer and now that it is getting cold at night I brought it inside. Is it normal for it to shed leaves this time of year? I also read some where that they bloom better if they are some what root bound is this true? If so I am thinking it wasn't such a good idea to plant it in such a large pot. Here is a picture of what it looked like during its blooming cycle.

Hi All - First posting here. I stumbled in here, after searching for info on ground cover that grows rapidly and vertically. I live in the Metro Atlanta area, specifically about 30 minutes SW of the airport in Newnan. Our lot slopes up from the street, and our back yard has always been nearly non-existent. It went back maybe 10-15 feet, was uneven, and full of rocks. I had someone come in and do some grading to get a fairly flat surface, and 15-20 feet from the back of the house, so we could actually use part of the back yard. One spot was used to put a cheap pool (You can see it's still filling in the pic). Grading is a lot cheaper than building retaining walls, so that's not in my plan, at least not for a year or two. What I want to do is find something that I can plant at the base of this vertical slope (the loose dirt will be removed), and have it grow up the slope vertically, and hopefully root into it as it grows, to aid in holding it in place. Ultimately, I'd like it to continue to the upper part which has always been weeds, and cover that, choking out the unattractive weeds, and making it more maintenance free. It sounds like Confederate Jasmine may be what I'm looking for. As you can see in the picture, I am surrounded by hard, compacted clay, and to make it more fun, it's probably the rockiest soil I've seen here, and I've been in this area most of my life. How long do you think it would take Confederate Jasmine to grow to the top of the bare area (maybe 7' at the corner peak)? This area is in full Sun from maybe 11AM till just about dusk each day. Would it grow straight up, or would it fan out and grow up and out at the same pace? Should I plant it just at the base? How far apart should I plant it, and how is Confederate Jasmine sold?
