We have a black walnut tree, and I absolutely cannot stand that thing! LOL! It is the last thing to leaf out in spring, the first to drop them in fall, and we were picking up walnuts daily for at least two months last fall! Blech! That tree's days are numbered, I tell you!! One of my dogs once got a black walnut stuck between his back teeth. It was lodged in such a way that it propped his jaw open and he couldn't close his mouth. :( I saw him walking around the backyard, drooling and holding his mouth open, and thought he must be having a seizure or something. Scared me to death! Toxic plant reports can be very confusing. I have run into a lot of what you mentioned with the hosta: One site says OK, the other says no way. :( I've really been pulling my hair out over it! I finally broke down and bought a super-expensive, but well-regarded, book about toxic plants, in an attempt to get to the bottom of it all. One thing I have gleaned is, there are all ranges of "toxic," from upset stomachs to death. There are a few plants that I can say with certainty I would never, ever, under any circumstances have in my yard. Then there is the category of plants for which I have not been able to find one report of toxicity. Like the highly toxic category, it's pretty small, too. These are the ones I'm sticking with in my yard. Most plants, it seems, fall somewhere in between. Toxic properties, but varying reports on the graveness of the toxicity. It is extremely difficult sometimes to determine to what degree they are toxic. Anyway...I think it's awesome that you are such a great dog owner, to be concerned for their safety. :) They are lucky dogs to have you!

Kwanso is an old double orange ditch lily. The deer seldom eat mine (while they eat everything else) and it blooms for quite a while after the typical orange single ditch daylily so I appreciate it for that but it is a beast and will crowd out most other plants. By the way both are pretty much sterile so they are not seeding. I find Kwanso is very aggressive and has spread into my beds. Mine started with less than a pinky tip of roots as an experiment. What I actually wanted was another orange double, Floro Pleno. Kwanso focuses on growing a nice plant before it blooms...it thus can "hide" for years. Its leaves are big and healthy. In poor conditions it just is a sea of green until it is happy. Its looks a bit beat and barely flowers then. I have found it spreading underground...its shoot's leaves actually green in the dirt without the sun. I suggest tracking your flowers as they bloom and dig out what you know you want and relocating it. If you only have that spot I suggest saving what you know you want and keeping them in definite clumps, aggressive pulling out anything that comes up in the middle between. If an orange pops up in a clump dig the clump and carefully tease out the orange plant while in bloom....it will only infiltrate worse later. I you are careful and water you will probably still get the rest of the plant to bloom. I think if you have it you may never get rid of it entirely. Finally, if you have a plant that is mostly smaller leaved but one piece of it is looks really healthy and grows better than the rest in the spring...it could be a seedling...but probably is Kwanso. Great plant but give it it's own piece of ground and never mix it in with other daylilies.

Oh, me, too! I'm over in the South of Bowie and I have acres of these. I don't care about trades unless they're red, but I will happily give away these babies. Oh - I could use dirt to replace the holes they'll leave. You can just stick a shovel in my ground and you'll have 100s. Christine
