Newbie here. Looking for help on shaping hibiscus tree!

Hello everyone, this is my first time on here. I have a hibiscus tree that I planted last September. Made some clippings in spring to encourage growth. Last week I was at a resort and saw a hibiscus tree shaped like an umbrella, thought it was incredible! My question is how do I start to shape this tree like that? I appreciate any suggestions!! The tree you saw was probably a weeping hibiscus. There are several hibiscus varieties that weep, but your tree won't grow that way. Sorry.

Whoa! Thanks for the feedback folks! The ripe ones are mostly from the older wood but there are some that appear to be ripening on greener shoots. Thanks again. Just did the first attempt at drying them in a dehydrator. Eh. I really just like to eat them fresh off the tree. Otherwise it's just a tease. Chris

I, too, am having a problem with my hardy hibiscus. They came up on time(after I cut off the dead from the winter) and grew up really fast. But now they have buds and are starting to drop leaves. They didn't do that last year. I was wondering if they might have a virus? I fed them Osmocote in late April/early May. Should I boost them with Miracle Grow now? Maybe the budding is starving them? They're in pots on my deck and they are HUGE!

Did you ever learn anything, about the change,IN THE SHAPE,of the leaf form ? Mine shows this same experience,after,I pruned it well,and brought it inside,for the winter. Does this possibly indicate a change in the sex of the plant? Or do these "changed leaves" show effect, in it's abilty to flower? Because it has no blooms,to date,(first days of summer). And,the"changed leaves",have not reverted back to original tear drop shape,or dropped, as I had hoped. With the change in season, returned it outside,remaining potted... and incresed fertilizer applications ... Changed leaves are healthy and numerous. Any info much appreciated

I'm not sure if it was trained to a tree shape, or if a few branches ended up that way with no pruning. I'll admit that we neglected it, too, because we didn't know how to deal with the thick trunks. I'll try to get a better picture or 2 tomorrow, but this picture shows the trunks(s) from the other side. Those areas sawed off were severely damaged or dead. I agree about trying to root the tall branch. I marked where it is still straight. It is 2 inches in diameter. Would air layering be the best way to root this branch? Even that method recommends using a smaller branch. If this plant truly prefers to be a bush, perhaps I should go with nature. I have room for a bushy plant elsewhere.

It is still a beautiful tree the way it is. Maybe if you want something different though you can do a few cuttings from it and start a braided tree?

my hibiscus tree did not bloom this year. I have it on my deck and gets full sun
