HELP! Hibiscus Tree looks horrible!
Comments (15)I bought my first two hibiscus trees last summer, and they did beautifully on our deck. I brought them inside when it started to get cold and kept them in the basement next to the sliding glass doors so they'd get some sunlight. I watered them very occasionally, but over the winter, they both lost all of their leaves (some turned yellow first) and ended up looking like a bunch of sticks. I did nothing in terms of pruning and really thought they were finished. Well, lo and behold, about a month ago, one and then the other started growing new leaves - the smaller one is now beautiful and blooming; the other is coming along more slowly but more new leaves and future blooms are sprouting every day. Recently I started to bring them outside during the day and inside again at night, and I started watering them regularly and feeding them once a week with Miracle Gro. Now it's warmed up enough to leave them outside all the time, and they seem to be doing great. Maybe before you prune, you should try taking them outside when it's warm enough during the daytime - sunlight and warmer temps seem to have done wonders for mine. Good luck!...See MoreMy hibiscus is sick! Help!
Comments (10)Is it sitting in water? How often do you water it? Prop the inside pot on a brick, or something like that so that it does not sit in water. Hibiscus do not like to be wet. They will shed leaves due to humidity changes, over watering . Did you repot it? Most often in winter, a good washing of leaves is enough. I have them in small pots, so it is easy for me. Cover the soil and pot with plastic( put them in a plastic bag ) & then use a hose or hand shower to give the leaves a good spray. keep us posted on its condition. Good luck....See MoreWhy are mango tree leaves yellowing and dropping? (w/ pics)
Comments (8)I agree with the two posters...I think the ones you're losing are the mature leaves, these do yellow and drop as they are replaced by new growths. Mine does the same thing usually when I have a growth flush. New leaves will harden off and darken in a few weeks. If it were my tree, I would taper off on the watering to every 3-4 days now...for about a week or two unless you get rain. By appx. 3 months I would water once every 5 days or so till you're tree gets a little more established(usually around 6 months) Nothing beats rain water to get those nice growth flushes...so much better than hose water. I would wait till its at least 6 weeks then I would "very" lightly fertilize. Either some Milorganite(or slow release) or Fish emulsion diluted. Mango trees are susceptible to fertilizer burn(leaves and roots) if given too much or too strong of a fertilizer...so add half of the recommended dosage. Don't put the granular fertilizer near the trunk...place it on the drip line...Don't fertilize after the end of October once the weather starts to cool off...hopefully by Dec or Jan. you might get some blooms? Just my advise... Good luck! Your tree looks nice and healthy!...See MoreMy fiddle leaf is dropping all its leaves suddenly, please help!
Comments (10)Direct sunlight would be outside in direct sun. The sun coming through your windows is already going to be filtered light. It would be very good for your tree to repot into a container with drainage, use something like the 5:1:1 mix and place it right up in front of a southern facing window where it recieves as much light as possible. I grow quite a few ficus benjaminas. They have the same general needs as your tree. Naturally, these trees want as much light as possible. Anything that says they don't like direct light is false. It's just that indoor grown leaves can't handle full outdoor sun unless acclimated. In the winter months, I keep the tree in front of a southern facing window with the addition of grow lights. I have five 55w (250w equivalent) 5500k grow lights above the tree. In the summer, I acclimate the tree over a span on a couple weeks and then place it in full direct sun all summer. That is when it puts out the most growth. Literally grows a couple feet every summer. the tree is 7 feet all and was under 4 feet tall when I got it a year and a half ago. Currently in an 18" terra cotta pot in Al's 5:1:1 mix....See Morebeachbarbie
