Growing Lemon Grass Successfully
Comments (18)Hi, I know this is an old post, but I wanted to mention that I bought a small clump of lemon grass at the nursery this spring and it turns out, it is not the kind that you find in Asian cooking, but another kind. I think this one is edible, too, but wasn't what I was looking for. I stopped at the local Asian grocer and bought several stalks of the lemon grass they had and it didn't have any roots on it. When I got it home, I trimmed the looser leaves from the stalks and then stuck them in about an inch of water in a small bucket and left them under the shade of the fig tree out front. In about 4-5 days, the stalks started to sprout roots and are anxious to get those roots into some soil, so I will now pot them up and see which ones do the best. noss...See Morelemon grass rooting from less base than I thought possible
Comments (4)I overwinter my lemon grass in my family room, which used to be an attached garage. I don't heat it specifically, just whatever heat comes from the house. It never freezes, but can be as cold as 38/39 degrees out there at times, and probably averages in the upper 40's for the winter. It does have very good light, as I took off the old garage door and put in all-glass French doors and sidelites, and it faces due south. Does fine out there, and I run it on the dry side....See Morethai lemon grass
Comments (7)treefrog supposedly you take a stalk of it- peel off the outer skin and then crush it up in your hands and rub all the clorophyl on you and thats what repels the skeeters I've never been affected by mosquito bites- shrug em off and in a day their gone. Ive had so many in the last 10 days that I think I'm becoming allergic- all the bites are getting infected even though I havent itched them. When and what is the playdate?? the fruit sale on sat? I will definitely be at the fruit sale bright and super early....See MoreLemon Grass
Comments (6)eahamel if we have a cold snap I will harvest my lemon grass and store the trimmed stems in my ref. until our cold season warms up some. I bought my starts from our local Festa store and they did not look good at all, mostly brown. But just sticking them into the soil with no effort or care they took off and every shoot became a nice plant some better than others, one was in complety in the shade, one in a very dry area where not much of anything would grow and 2 in my herb garden. Of course those in my herb garden took of but everyone no matter where I placed them did survive. I do not even have good fortune with thyme it seems to do great until it dies quickly. Basil does well, I am in the process of saving some Thai and sweet basil for seed next year. I find fresh saved seeds do so much better than store bought seeds. I find I need to keep getting rosemary starts in case it decides it wants to die suddenly. I almost killed my Greek oregano, too much shade, this from a plant that grew from a 3 inch box store pot to over 3 feet by 3 feet in a couple years. So now I know that it can only tolerate so much shade....See Morecziga
