Thursday's mixed bag

What a difference today was weather wise. But tomorrow we go back to the hot/humid weather again. Still no rain and my rain barrel is nearly empty :-(.

I did manage to get several plants in the ground today but still more to do.

INCA PRINCE - one of the favorites here. I couldn't get all the blooms in the shot.

AWESOME APPLIQUE - I thought last years blooms were better.

LUNAR MAX - You couldn't miss this clump this morning.

OPEN DOOR - is trying to save itself from being kicked out of the garden.

PENNY PINSLEY - really good scape height and many buds

WESTBOURNE POPSICKLE - you either love it or hate it. I like the color so it stays.

AND some seedlings

ETERNAL WARRIOR X GLASS BEAD GAME - 2nd year seedling, tall, so so bud count but I like the form and color.

UNK X UNK - 2nd year , tall scapes, so so bud count. I like the yellow to green throat and light lavender color.

And some lilies and a butterfly

Just wondering - Why would you want to kick OPEN DOOR out of the garden? All your clumps, including that one, look marvelous to me. I love, love, love the butterfly pictures!

Lovely butterfly. And I just Love YELLOW STAR! It is my favorite as I grow it here too!!! The clump of LUNAR MAX is my favorite daylily.

Can you post pics of the local trellis? What I want to figure out is can you switch between the two styles. If so I would do both methods with extra space between the lines of the regular style. If you need to do something others won't you might want to try methods others won't. Maybe you will have better luck.

That would be my priority also. I've planted a few trees that I knew I was going to cut down in the future. I try to move them before they get too big to move. I'm batting under .500 of actually doing it though. I happen to have a small Skylands seedling with no leader.....yet. That's a Lawson Cypress in the background. 'Treasure Island'. I'm trying to figure out an arrangement for most of these. Mike

Adam, is your Devoniensis the bush or the climber, and how have you found its growth habit so far? I think it was Jeri possibly who once posted photos of an example of the reputedly low-growing bush well over head-high and wide. I seem to remember it had stayed small for years, before starting to put out enormous octopus arms at odd angles and exploding into its mature enormousness...

You do not want concentrations of organic matter in a container soil. The best container soils are those that offer both durability (not inclined to breakdown or decompose) and a high textural component. That eliminates things like compost, manures or worm castings. All will continue to degrade and breakdown and as they do, the individual particles get smaller and smaller, obstructing fast drainage. Fast drainage and aeration are the key elements in a container soil. That's why the best container soils are soil-less mixes that contain a high percentage of grit/perlite/Turface (a calcined clay) and composted softwood (conifer) bark and minimal amounts of peat. No garden soil or topsoil, no vermiculite, no compost or manures. I love, love your seedling,

ETERNAL WARRIOR X GLASS BEAD GAME - 2nd year seedling,

Its fantastic face. Dont count out the bud count increasing just yet, or more branching, I have a five year old seedlings that has hit its stride with 4-5 way branching, I wouldnt ever have thought it would do that from the first couple of years.

Debra: OPEN DOOR has had so many poor openings, I finally said, shape up or ship out. I guess it got the message.

I was so intrigued as to how well the butterfly stayed in place as I just kept shooting consecutive frames of pictures and it just kept feeding on the coneflower. Now the hummingbird is another one I've been trying to get while it feeds on the lilies. One day.

Rita: My husband loves the yellows. This one is just starting to bloom now and puts on quite a show with its very tall stalks.

silverkelt: I appreciate your input and comments. I think these seedlings need more room as the bed I have them in is packed. When you've moved a seedling did it set it back the following year?

A refreshing post. Somehow, it doesn't look hot there. Inca Prince looks marvelous shaded. Your seedlings are vibrant. The butterfly is plump and speckled. And the lilium look crisp.

Here it does , a typical seedling will be set back , but so doesnt many daylilies, even muture ones that Ive moved.

I moved a few this year becuase one of my rose, Hansa, went berzerk in its 5th year, hitting 7 feet by 7 or so, I actually had to cut it back some but I had a # of seedlings under it.

I stick seedlings all over.. which can complicate my master map lol... sometimes I think I remember something, go look it up and I really think I might have mismarked something.. sometimes there is no way a seedling came from a certain cross I made or purchased.

The butterfly pictures caught my interest first. How cooperative of the little darling to hold still for a couple of lovely portraits...Inca Prince looks vibrant and since I like orange, it's my favorite. I also like the 2nd year seedling and hope you allow it to mature even longer before giving it the heave ho....Maryl

Very nice mixed bag! My favorites are your first seedling, and the Westbourne cultivar. I like the color, too.

Julia - Here where it's hotter, Open Door always opens well. On her website, Karol mentions one petal doesn't want to lay flat, but I've never had that problem.

Sharon: I'm not sure what EW X GBG will do over the long term but I would like to cross it with MEAN GREEN next year and see what kind of kids I get.

W.POPSICKLE is much shorter this year than last but I know this is not just a "Julia's garden problem". Hopefully next year we have better luck with the weather.

Julia, you have some beautiful clumps. I am a real fan of Inca Prince too. I like Westborne's Popsickle, and the lilies are lovely. The butterfly pics are very well done. My favorite is your gorgeous seedling. I really like the color and the form of it. It's a beauty.

Beautiful picture of Lunar Max! I like Penny Pinsley too, it looks so cute. And my favorite is your Eternal Warrior seedling.
