Need directions on planting rose of sharon seeds!

I just got some in a trade. I would like to know how I should plant them.(plant depth, nicking, etc.) Should I nick them like tropical hibiscus seeds? Also can someone post a picture of a rose of sharon seed so I can make sure it is an actual rose of sharon?(my seeds have hairs on them)

Maria: By all means you can collect the seed from your Rose of Sharon and plant them....but you may not necessarily end up with a Rose of Sharon with the same colour and/or characteristics of the parent plant. I would imagine that in the spring if you look around the bases of your Rose of Sharon that there will be many volunteer seedlings growing that have been planted by nature and you can collect and grow them on rather than trying to nurture a seedling on through the winter if that was your intent..or maybe you enjoy the challenge?

Germination of rose of sharon seeds: Easy germination. Start seed indoors 4-6 weeks prior to last spring frost. Sow seeds on good seed starting mix, covering seeds with about 1/4" mix. Moisten mix and keep moist until germination begins. Place container in location at 68-70ÂºF. Seed should begin germinating in 10-20 days.

Rose of Sharon seeds do have hairs on them and they're a mid-brown color. Below is a link to a pic of seeds.
You don't have to nick them. Plant them about 1/4" deep in potting soil, keeping moist, but not too wet. Unless you have a warm place to start them now, I'd wait until spring.

My ROS drop their seeds in my beds all the time and every spring I'm pulling up hundreds of seedlings. You could either try germinating the seeds in baggies with a damp coffee filter or just plop the seed into seed starting mix, keep moist and see what happens. Nothing ventured, nothing gained!

since the seeds sprouted, it means that the seeds was v\iable and able to sprout. the reason why the colour is different is because there might have been some other coloured ROS nearby. and the bees that pollenated your neighbour's to get seeds probably rubbed some pollen from another colour shrub so the seeds were a mix of both the colours

Hey - to me, I don't think they are ripe. I think they need to be left on the parent plant until the pods turn brown and open up. You could try planting the seeds you have ... by cracking open the pod and then planting the seeds inside. At my old house we had about 15 mature rose of sharon bushes and my dad and I would have to go out in the winter and clip off the dried out seed pods because when they would open, if there was a strong gust of wind, the seeds were all over the ground... and left some not so nice suprises the next spring when we had thousands of seedlings coming up ... but that was because we had so many ROS. Anyways, if I were you, I would possibly try some of those individual seeds, if those do not work, in fall when leaves are coming off the trees, ask your friends to check out all of their pods... a lot should be brown and dried out... that is when we've always had great luck with seeds. If you can get some then, I would store them and then plant them the following spring unless you have means to store them inside over the winter. Anyone else agree/disagree? God Bless, Matt

Received Blushing Bride seeds in a Seed Exchange. Can I sow these in the ground come next spring? I'm in zone 7bTX, hot and dry.

I read on the form that Hybrids are sterile and that Blushing Bride did not produce seeds. If that is the case, I may have been sent another variety???

I've grown them from seed,using the wintersowing method,like rosco p said they might not come true but that's half the fun waiting to see what you get

Still pruning-cuttings are the best way to produce more plants and for them to come true to the parent plants. They self-seed as long as there is some bare ground for them to fall onto. The seed can even be harvested the next spring if they are still on the plant.

I agree with Wally,that if you want the same plant that you have,cuttings are the best way,or a friend has one you like.but if you want to cross polinate and come up with a new one then seeds.I dont agree that its the best way to produce more plants.I can plant thousands of seed in the winter and by spring have thousands of plants here is how I do cuttings of hibiscus.Both ways have their good merits.especially since some hibiscus and even the rose of sharons are sterile.
