golden st. john's wort, hypericum frondosum, will bloom for that long a period. they are not long-lived shrubs but usually leave you some seedlings afterward, though i don't consider it weedy. i grew it some years ago in sun from morning to about 1:00p.m. it was semi-evergreen here but would be deciduous in your zone. nice foliage, flowers and seedpods and very attractive to bees and butterflies. Sue, I hate to bring this up - I always enjoy discusions about what plants to add to existing plants and I don't want to rain on your enthusiasm - but where are you planning to add these new flowers? Is there more to this bed that's empty or emptier than the bed in your picture. I ask because my Alchemillas are currently as tall as your 3 Endless Summer Hydrangeas and wider. My Endless Summers are nearly as tall as my 4 ft tall fence and 3 ft plus wide. My guess is that in 2 or 3 seasons you'll need to move things out of the current bed. From your pix I'd think that adding a few annuals here and there would add the late color that you're missing. Here's a few old views from my garden - I thought about posting them in the "What is your stupidest garden mistake" post, except I couldn't decide what area to show everyone! LOL 2003 Stone Bench bed. Same stone bench with alchemillas in bloom 2005. Can you find the bench? the mugo pines? the stone path? Alchemillas long gone from bench area. Picture is from 2007. The Lady's Mantle was moved to back side of the 3 trees in this long skinny bed. Alchemillas were replaced by Caramel Heucheras and Strutter's Ball daylily in the center section edged by the stone path. Since the above picture was taken, an alchemilla seedling has seeded itself into the second heuchera and is nearly as large as the heuchera! I haven't figured out how to separate the two - heuchera are really touchy in my garden - and I'm afraid if I pull it and tear the two roots apart (if I can tell which are which) then replant the heuchera - it will promptly die on me. :))

Aloha, Daylilies in my Cottage garden has been a learning process for the last 3 years. You can't do better then to learn from the folks on this forum. You can go back through the many posts to see the many fabulous faces of Daylilies. The more you look the more you will define and refine your taste. The other considerations is the bloom times. You want a selection of early, mid-season and late bloomers to extend the show. If budget is a consideration as it is for me, don't loose heart. There are so many in the $5 to $20 range, usually older varieties that can fit any color theme or loved form. There is no reason to have anyone less then ones you've fallen in love with. Floota's garden as shown in her generous photos above is a stunning blue print for what is possible.I am so excited for you, as you start this adventure of discovery. Along with this forum, a tool that is invaluable is Tinker's Garden Daylily Database. Bookmark it. You can do a search on any named Daylily for it's stats and photos as seen in gardens. You will notice that the color and form of a particular daylily may vary between the 3 photos shown. This is due to different growing conditions and the time of day the photo was taken. I cross reference the photos seen on nursery sites with Tinkers to see what is consistent, and then take it with a grain of salt. lol. The photos and descriptions posted by this forums members from those with MY same zone are what I trust the most. If you can do a day journey to a daylily farm/nursery, do. Nothing like seeing them in-person. Make sure you use the search feature on this forum to see old posts on particular areas of your interest. For example- " favorite Corals" "True Pinks" "Late bloomers" Companion plants etc.etc....Good luck, enjoy!

It takes a couple of weeks to look like it is working. I have killed ditch daylilies with round up. I had dug them up and planted them in a flower bed before I knew any better. They didn't bloom enough, were infested with grass and the foilage looked ratty. Way too much work to dig them up. I'm hoping this works again. Don't want to dig all them up. Right next to huge peonys, and they are also invaded with grass that is working it's way to the peonys. And there are also daffadils growing in between them. Jeannie
