Pod collection started today - What about you?

I got 2 pods today so the collection process has started here.

I want to share with you the amount of pods I've got coming from ANGELS IN WAITING. Polston makes a great daylily and it is definitely pod fertile LOL. I don't know who the pollen parent is as I wasn't deadheading as I usually would do because I've been just too tired at the end of the day.

I'm nearing the peak of pod harvest right now. Yesterday I picked 23 pods. I'm most excited about the Crimson Edging crosses. I have crossed it with fancy round whites and near white UFs. I also have a lot of pods with Zephyr's Song and Extra Terrestrial as the pollen parents.

I'm collecting anywhere from five to 10 pods a day here. Still have LOTS of pods that are not ready yet.

Thanks for the reply, floral_uk. Wondering - does Lapsana communis have any fluff on the seeds? I was thinking maybe it was in the aster family however there is definitely no evidence of any fluffy bits at all. I thought all seeds in that family carried that tel tail mark.

ljpother - People often describe plants on this forum. People are incredibly quick to respond and often ask questions to clarify. Today, I posted a "Plant ID Please" question at 4:19, answers poured in, the plant was identified in a couple of hours. Amazing. The culture of the WS forum is to always help others. Pippi: I harvested two more bowls of seed yesterday (7/23). The rudbeckia are R. hirta 'Rustic Colors' from Swallowtail. I don't see 'Rustic Colors' listed now, maybe they will offer it again in the fall. I WS several other R. hirta varieties - Indian Summer, Cherokee Sunset, Denver Daisy, Goldilocks - and also R. fulgida 'Goldsturm.' (I went a little nuts over ruds this year) The other varieties are growing in areas with more protection - they are still blooming like crazy. I'll get seed from the others when they are ready but don't know if plants grown from that seed will be similar to the parents. Example: Don't know if plants grown from 'Cherokee Sunset' seed will look like my 'Cherokee Sunset' ruds. They may not but I'll WS that seed and keep my fingers crossed. All the rudbeckias are beautiful - despite the awful weather! I have another 350' of driveway bed to plsnt next year so I'm euphoric to get so much seed!

I write my crosses with a No. 2 pencil on string tags, slipping them onto the scape. (I tried the plastic tags, but the ones I got wouldn't stay on the scape.) I make sure that wilted blossoms don't cover the tags, as they can make it impossible to read the information. When the seed pods split open, I snap them off the scape along with the tag and place each pod in a separate small medicine bottle. I put the lid on, with the string hanging out. I carry two zip-lock plastic bags with me when I gather seed pods, one for the empty med bottles and the other for the ones containing harvested pods. When I come inside, I empty each pod into a small paper Dixie cup, along with the tag. I let the seeds air-dry 7 days. To store them, I use small clear plastic zip bags for coins that have a white space on them where I can write the cross. (Office Depot has them.) I put them in the refrigerator until I am ready to start soaking my seeds. If I start them in the fall soon after harvest, I seem to have a much better germination rate than if I wait until spring. I put the seeds I plan to start in a solution of 1/2 gallon of distilled water + 6 tablespoons hydrogen peroxide. I pour this in each little bag about 2/3 the way and seal. I put the small bags of seeds and solution into a plastic container, cover them with more solution and put a lid on it. I keep them in the refrigerator for six weeks. After the six weeks has passed, I put the container in a dark closet. After 4-5 days, I start checking for germinating seeds, removing and planting those that are beginning to grow. I prepare white styrofoam cups by punching holes around the bottom and writing the crosses, etc. on the sides with Sharpy pens. After preparing them, I fill them with pre-moistened potting soil and make depressions about 1/4" deep (no more). I then carefully set the sprouting seeds on their sides with the emerging white roots turning downward. On the average, I usually plant 3-4 seeds per cup. I cover them lightly with either potting soil, fine vermiculite or builder' sand. Once that's done, I slip sandwich baggies over the cups. I place the cups in large aluminum foil roasting pans that I get at Sam's Club by the bundle. I can put 15 cups in 1 pan. I fill the pans with water and set them outside in my little greenhouse. As soon as I see green shoots, I remove the sandwich baggies and move the pan of sprouting seedlings to the edge of the porch where they get sunshine. Once they develop their second set of leaves, I begin adding fertilizer - 1 scoop of Schultz's Expert Plant Food to 1 gallon of water. I live where winters are relatively mild, so I prefer starting seedlings in the fall. Due to the deer problem, this year I'll be moving the larger seedlings to white pots to remain for the duration of winter. (Since you live where winters are very cold, I think it best to start your seeds in spring.) I write the assigned seedling number and the cross with a Sharpy pen on white plastic knives to be used as markers. When I eventually move the seedlings to the garden next spring, I'll shove the knife almost completely underground so the ink doesn't fade, and so they don't get knocked away from the seedling. (I've had to learn this the hard way!) I planted some seeds this summer after letting them air-dry for only 4 days. I had problems with moldy seeds, so I won't be in that big of a hurry again. Nancy

What about adding crown molding to the walls above the cabs? Then there is something there for visual interest but not as busy as a collection of something-or-other? Kitchens can look cluttered so easily - pots, pans, food, utensils, phones, papers, etc - that leaving that area clear, except for some crown, might be restful for the eye. You've done a nice job in your kitchen already. It's so much more pleasing than the before shot. Now a Disclaimer: I have crown molding on my cabs & the wall, both painted BM vanilla ice cream. I love, love, love it and how it looks against my wall color. Something up there if I happen to glance up but it's not busy & drawing my eye up. Or needing to be occasionally taken down & dusted/washed. Another thought:you'll have to buy/trade/create the whole collection at once to fill in the space. That might get expensive, especially if your 'heart' isn't really into the collection of items. P.S. And just what do you think you are doing climbing up on the counter-tops placing those blue items? You have a baby in the house - monkey see, monkey do - you know.

Debra and Nancy: You two are far ahead of me LOL. I expect in another couple of weeks I'm gonna have alot of pods to pick.

I tried several times to use BALLERINA ON ICE and WINTER TREASURE but with the extremely hot weather we got the pollen wasn't taking on alot of crosses I tried. I'm learning that timing and the weather is everything when doing hybridizing.

I had some very dry periods, but overall, it's been a pretty good year for seed. I'm almost finished, probably less than 50 pods remaining. I'll finish with 3-4000 seed.

My pods are still swelling up, none are ready to harvest.

I've got some nice ones that I'll share on the LA.

Ed: 3-4,000???????? Where do you put them all? And I get anxious with 100 seeds to grow.LOL.

I know Julia, I probably won't plant more than 2000, but it's just too much fun dreaming about what this cross will do, or that cross. I can't help myself!

I've started cutting off any new scapes to allow the plants to conserve energy, and to remove the temptation! ;0)

I am surprised that with the excessive heat we have had plus that six weeks of no rain during early bloom period that the daylilies made pods. Yes, lots and lots and lots of pods. And they are still setting pods like crazy. I try to keep up with snapping them off until I cut the entire scape as these are bee pods and I don't hybridize. I don't want them to set pods but they do.

How do you know when the pods are ripe, and what do you do with them when they are? plant? extract seeds? I have a few pods on my daylilies and i would LOVE to end up with new plants. Someone please advise...

I harvested my first 2 pods today. Most of mine won't be ready to harvest for at least another week or two.

Ken, Pods are ready to harvest when they begin to crack open at the top. I snap them off the scape, bring them in the house, crack open the pod and remove the seeds. I then let them air dry for 2-3 days. When they're dry I put them in ziplock bags and store them in the fridge until I decide to start them. I start mine indoors under grow lights and there are others that just direct sew them in the ground in the spring. Both methods work. Hope this info was helpful.

Thank you so much Linda! I have always wondered what to do with those things. I currently have about 100 Daylilies...mostly antiques rescued from a shady fate under my grandmother's gigantic Camellias. I have also started collecting newer ones from one of my favorite Daylily growers whom I befriended on a chance meeting. They have a most wonderful garden and nearly 2000 varieties, some of which are their own creations. It just so happens that two of my favorites that I purchased from them happen to have had pods, and so I scurried out and harvested...one I think may have been too early, and one too late, but we will see! I thank you again for the information.

Ed: 2,000 only ????? LOL.

I did notice today on MAUNA LOA that the pod has opened slightly on the side and I can actually see the white seeds inside. Has anyone else seen this happen with their pods? Do you think the seeds will mature this way?

Julia--this has happened to me as well on occasion (Jewel in a Crown and The Goldilocks Effect are the usual miscreants). I just watch the pod carefully for when the visible seeds turn black and the pod starts to shrivel. I also get a weird variation on this theme: either grasshoppers or snails bore holes into the pods so that the maturing seeds are visible--I use the same wait and see on those.

Seed set was difficult this year in Fredericksburg, VA--we started getting 90-100+ degree days early in June right as bloom go going and we've been pretty much rain-free that whole time (still are). But, what did set is just beginning to mature--about 10 pods so far with plenty to keep me busy through August. Horrible, horrible summer, but Substantial Evidence finally(!) set a pod.

ozzysboy: Thanks for the feedback. I checked early this morning and they are still white.

It got hot here again and the humidity is creeping upwards. Hope this doesn't affect the pods too much. I did notice early this morning while checking the garden that several pods have shriveled up so I am assuming the bee hybridizing didn't take.

My lemon yellow daylily from early spring has produced a seedpod, and I assume it has "selfed", if that is the correct term. Is that was is also called a "bee-pod"? Will the seeds come true? I am pretty sure it is H. lilioasphodelus, formerly H. flava.

it's official, i harvested my first 3 pods today, but only two were on purpose. i got 3 seeds from metallic blue eyes x unk, 1 seed from metallic blue eyes x silver sword and four seeds from chantilly ruffles x butterfly cove. hopefully the other pods have more seeds in them!

Well, if it made a pod without your dabbing pollen, yes, that is what we call bee pods as we figgure the bees crossed pollen for us.

There is no way to know were the pollen came from. Anything around it that the bees visited, not necessarily ones of the same type of daylily at all. One can only guess.

No, your seeds will never come true. Even if you crossed it with itself. The only way to get more of your daylilies is by division, that is more fans of the same clump. The seeds make new and different daylilies. This can be very good or very bad as there is no way to know if its going to be beautiful or ugly until it blooms.

Today I got a couple more pods. Looks like something is nibbling on the pods though on several of the scapes. I wonder if the birds (finches) are pecking at them.

SEVENTY TIMES SEVEN x UNKNOWN - 9 seeds
NO MORE TEARS x UNKNOWN - 11 seeds
SPACECOAST EXTREME FASHION x UNKNOWN - 2 seeds

All 3 I hope will give me some frilly edged babies.

I am done dabbing pollen and some of my pods are very plump. I am nowhere near harvesting.
