Registered cultivars- Slightly Different Nursery

Again, bright sun forced me to use an umbrella when taking cultivar pictures. I hated it, but wouldn't have had any pictures otherwise.

All of these are Paul's registered introductions:

Really, really beautiful. I am glad you were able to get all these pictures and post them. I especially love CHEETO, FABER SABRE and POLKVILLE PRINCESS.

I want to choose a shade tree which can be prune up since I need to plant it 5 feet from the street curb and also 5 feet from the driveway of a house, which our daughter rents from us. Even so this shade tree's canopy should mature to overhang the street and driveway. Young shumard oaks, once they mature enough to begin producing acorns, drop massive amounts of acorns. That makes too much litter on driveways and streets. I learned that lesson with the two shumards planted in front of my house, especially once their canopies matured to spread over the sidewalk. I have not researched the nutall oaks, yet. I do not know how to determine which potted oak trees at the nursery will be male and which will be female. My B&B shumards when they were first planted had 4 inch diameter trunks and if I remember right were about 12 feet tall. To be that size, they must have already been 5,6 or more years old when they were planted. Even so, it took at least 4 more years of them growing in my front yard before they began producing enough acorns for me to realize that they were female trees. From that last statement you can tell that, I still do not know how differently the male and female trees appear as they flower in the spring. Even if I did know how to more quickly select specifically male Oaks, I am not certain I would want a male oak, since they, like so many other male species trees, are reported to produce a higher quantity of allergins, which is harmful for so many people, than the female oaks produce.

Well, when you have a certain growing shape on many plants, and you see they all look the same, even when they are growing together if you see the same growing shape on all of them, chances are that will be the way the plant will grow. I have seen many plants at lowes, Kmart, and Walmart for many years, but this one keeps its shape on every single one. Even the Big Mouth when you grow many in the same environment they grow a little different sometimes. The slim leaf this plant has appears to be a strong genetic factor, for all of the plants have it. This is not a Big Mouth. The cultivar was probably mass produced by a large nursery, and they probably could not care lesss about giving it a name. The plant could later deploy wider leaves, but I am sure the other leaves will dominate their growth if kept in a sunny spot. It grows nicely flat, but it could be a tall growing plant as well. We will just have to wait and see.

I'm not sure how well it shows up in the picture but he had used the brown mulch / red mulch to delineate the planting and display beds vs. the walking areas. I really liked the contrasting effect and this is going to look better every year. The Display garden area was newly planted this year but as the clumps grow and the perennials fill in ( he also has some very unusual shrubs and small trees here) this will be stunning. When Paul was in PA, he sold perennials so this guy knows his perennials and some interesting and different perennials are planted here also. However, I think keeping the two different mulches separated and neat will be extremely difficult unless they're prepared to apply it shortly before garden tours each year!

lalalandwi: I can understand your disappointment with some sellers on LA. Yes, there are ones as Maximus says who have very high prices for their DL's but I too just ignore those as I would ignore any seller on any site with an extremely high price. Low priced dl's are only low until you tack on the shipping and you have spent more than the daylily was. I check Ebay, LA, alot of the sites mentioned here on GW as well as just googling for a particular daylily I want and see what comes up and then I decide what I can afford to pay. I like to try new sellers since I always seem to find a "gem" worth doing repeat business with. I'm not afraid of sellers in the South as I was once a bit afraid to try. I am still skeptical of California growers but maybe I'll get over that as well one day. I'd post who I buy from on the auction sites but then you might be bidding against me one day ;-). Best advice. Stick to what you can afford and don't get caught up in the frenzy. Good luck. I'm sure you'll find some great buys. friesfan1: If you use an account like gmail, hotmail or yahoo you shouldn't have a problem getting your responses. What a bunch of interesting ones! Screaming Queen, Redneck Riviera, Mars Attack (my favorite too)--better not let Maximus (Chris) see these, for she loves the hot colors and big eyes. Life on Pern isn't exactly a wallflower either. A big question, though, is hardiness.

I love Hotta Pinkie, and I have heard Paul's hiliarious story about the name. Life on Pern and Cheeto also really appeal to me.

Honestly, I don't think hardiness would be an issue. Paul is in the NC mountains (Western part of the state- west of Charlotte) , which often behaves like zone 6 in the winter. They get plenty of cold weather and he is breeding for hardiness.

Great photos of some beautiful DL's, I have a small order coming from him in a few days so can't wait to receive. Paul is such a nice man with a great sense of humor.

Question: you mention Paul... since I also live in the Western NC mountains, can you tell me his full name, nursery name, and what town he's located in? Maybe his place is close enough to visit!

Also, he moved down there from PA -- I think he told me from the Poconos (mountains) in fact -- and it's quite possible that plants he's using still have genes from northern-hardy things.

I've had no problems with his plants' hardiness BTW.

And Paul sends very nice bonuses with his order too. His plants are very, very prone to rebloom for me. hen they come they are massive healthy fans.

Cheeto, and Loverboy are number one and two respectively for me. I also like Screaming Queen. Anyone know if his daylilies can take full sun without melting or fading? Mountain climates can be so much different then those of us in the lower areas....Maryl
