Balcony Herb Grower in Houston

Hello all! I am growing rosemary, catnip, and basil on my balcony. Currently they are in the original four inch pots that you get from the nursery. My questions...

When should I repot?

They receive only about 5 hours of direct sunlight...problem?

Thanks for your input/advice. I am a newbie, so no information is too basic.

Well, if you pull the plants out of their pots and the roots are looking like they are curving around the shape of the pot, it's time... don't pot them in too big of a pot, the rosemary needs drainage and could rot in too big of a pot. It would probably be nice for you to mix some perlite with the potting soil, don't fertilize the rosemary.
catnip and basil will do okay with that amount of sun, depending where you are, but the rosemary might be a little unhappy. Though, I don't know where you are, and will they start getting more sun as the year progresses? If so, the basil might need some shade.

Thanks for the speedy reply Heathen...I didn't realize you can pull the plants out of their pots just to check the roots. I'll do that. I have gentle ferts that I'll reserve for the basil and catnip.

As for where I am...I am in Houston and we are expecting longer days; however, my balcony only gets approximately five hours of direct sunlight a day. It may increase, but not much.

I am using organic potting soil that contains some perlite...what ratio of perlite to potting soil would you recommend for the rosemary? Thanks in advance...

Florida, I have heat envy. All my citrus plants are inside now. If I had your place my Meyer Lemon would be in heaven. Makes the BEST lemon aid--there's a great forum dedicated just to citruses here. I've never tried growing rosemary from seed but have had amazing luck rooting it. Just cut a piece and put it in water. My advice would be to start with a few plants. Last year was my first year without a garden plot in a while and I tried several tomatoes (make sure they are determinate--they'll stay small) and peppers along with my typical herbs, citruses, and flowers...too much! I couldn't move and got a nasty infestation of white flies. I would also suggest to get some yellow sticky traps so you can see infestations before they get out of hand. Also, don't worry if your plants die. It happens! I've learned a ton from my failures!

Hello primavera_grower, Nice to see other Katy resident in GW. Same as you, my yard is full of gumbo clay. I must soak the ground slowly if I need to dig the soil. When I started gardening, I just dug a hole, planted something, fill the hole with good soil not natural gumbo, hoping the plant will grow and bloom beautifully. Needless say, they all drowned due to this bathtub effect. I tried tilling with alots organic matters (humas, cow manures, etc), and the beds came out nicely. My backyard is filled with raised beds. Comparing those (2) different approaches, I would go with raised beds if I need to do all over again. If you had missed starting Corriander from seed, you can purchase a grown plant from store, plant it in a garden and let it reseed it. This Autumn it will come up by itself.

Mint is one of the herbs that grow very well in containers since it can become very invasive in a garden. It's also a wonderful "potted herb" for apartment dwellers. I never recommend growing anything you plan to eat in painted or certain types of metal containers. Paints have chemicals that will leach into your soil, thus contaminating your herbs. If you have the room on your balcony, try to find a half whiskey barrel. I've used these with great success in planting mints and container tea gardens, and I've planted up to seven tea herbs in one barrel. Good luck!

Don't get me started! Tomatoes: Carmello, Goliath, JD's C-Tex Early Black, Taxi, Dona, best cherry: Sugary, next is Matts Wild Look for nurseries that carry plants that are not just the bar coded plastic tag. I like the popsicle stick plants by Gunthers and the straight plastic tags from a grower in Liverpool Tx. I also like the wide varieties at Another Place in Time. I too, try and stay away from big boxes and Chef Jeff(I think he is grown in Michigan). Cukes: I grow from seed. my favorite is Renne's Garden, Chelsea Prize which is a seedless English cuke. You just have to wait till it is warm. straight 8's are good too. Blueberries: BeckiBlue is best this year ( assuming squirrels leave anything!) Big Bertha pepper and Fooled You is good too. Agree with above, skip big box store for advice. They are the ones selling tomatoes to people in June. Drive into Houston, drive to Tomball...worth the drive. Go to : Wabash, Another Place in Time, Buchanans, Backyard Gardener and Joshua's Natives. This is a circle you can do in the Heights.
