I regularly cut mine down as far as the solid bits. It will survive cutting right down to ground level, but that's too much effort for yours truly. Lemongrass is virtually unkillable.

If you want to divide it, simply hold a shovel a little distance into the air, then forcibly drop it anywhere in the clump you like. Repeat procedure into the clump as often as you want, and do the same with the bits you've chopped away, too. You only need one little stem with roots on it to make a new plant. You could end up with several hundred new plants, depending on the size of the original clump.

It's never happened to me, but I suggest being careful with the blades of lemongrass. The plant isn't called Razor Grass for nothing! If handled the wrong way, you could end up with cuts not unlike paper-cuts.

Thank you for the help. I divided all the clumps the other day and just removed all the old growth and left the green. I think I will cut them all down to the tip of the solid part. I know what you mean I had a pompas grass plant...looks almost identical to lemon grass and that thing was wicked..like paper cuts with serated edges.

I've killed a lemon grass! Or rather the British winter did it for me. Having now seen it grow in steamy Malaysia I can understand why. Thanks for the tips about sharp edges. I've got some seeds now and hope they'll do well once the weather really warms up.
