Taking the time to enjoy....
Comments (14)Elle, ask anything and someone, somewhere will answer. As for the falls, for some reason, it took me a while to wrap my head around it. I had the basic idea of what I wanted, but I was stumped on how to ACTUALLY start the falls. And, of course, I needed the 'perfect' rock. When 'The Rock' was found, it seemed to fall into place when it was set at the edge right above where the water makes its last drop into the pond. From there, I just stair-stepped it backwards toward the filterfall box. I still have a long way to go, and waiting on spring. I so want to get back out there and begin again. I want to finish the edges around the pond and finish the falls. I haven't quite figured it all out, but I think that's where the fun comes in....See MoreHELP! Not much time left this year to enjoy my roses
Comments (8)Hi again! Karl, you make some very good points about fertilizing. I am probably not doing enough or not enough of the right things. I have been fairly successful growing them . I have a small rose bed which my sweet husband dug up for me replacing all of our hard clay soil with organic loose soil. I add nutrients each time I plant a new rose. Here in Pa. I give them about 3 years to show me what they've got and if I am not happy with them they are replaced. I know that is severe but I am 53 years young and there are so many beautiful roses to try out there! I do weed and water and mulch and dead-head. I spend a lot of time with my roses. It gives me great pleasure. I am going to take your advice and fertilize one last time with Vigoro All Purpose as Mike suggested or perhaps Miracle Grow. I tried the fish emulsion a couple years ago --YIKES! We live in a very rural area and after I put that on all of my roses something dug them all up overnight!! They must have liked the smell. My husband and I could only figure that it was a raccoon or possuum? I was so upset that I swore off of that stuff for good! Mike again thanks I didn't realize that those products were merely tonics. Ramblin Rose I am glad you like my forum name. I try to live in that rosey state of mind each day BUT some days it sure ain't easy! :) Lastly ,Diane thanks for the encouraging words! You guys are all great to help me out!...See MoreSpring is the best time for Heucheras (Zone 5a IL)
Comments (20)Vivian: I came across Georgia Peach at the nursery today and was going to buy it on your recommendation until I saw the price $21.99. I think that is the most expensive Euchera I have ever seen. I have a Hort society bus tour coming up in June and I think I will wait until then and see if I can find it a little cheaper. Yours is lovely but yikes that price seemed steep....See MoreDo you cut back your Heuchera in the fall?
Comments (8)This is a first but I am going to disagree with gardengal. In the land of ice and snow hardy plants can certainly be damaged by frost. On May 23rd 2014 we had a very unusual late frost and plants I had in the ground for nearly 20 yrs. were severely affected. Hostas were the hardest hit, some turning to total mush. They did come back from the roots. Freshly planted items could take a harder hit. Edited to add - We in cold zones have an additional consideration, the nasty phenomenon known as frost heave. It can throw plants out of the ground with repeated freeze thaw cycles. This occurs with plantings done in fall as well as spring....See Morevivian_2010 (IL Zone 5a)
