Milk Thistle Seedling Worry

I have never grown Milk Thistle before. I am intruiged by the plant, so I decided to order some seeds for it & grow a plant or two this year. My 1 Milk Thistle seedling I ended up with seems to be doing fine (germination test of floating pellet tray failed miserably & didn't bode well for plants I started in it). It's a healthy color & is still growing noticeably. The problem/worry I have is that as of about a week ago, it has tipped over. lol...It seems to be definitely still growing fine. Is it normal for MT seedlings to tip over? Maybe it will straighten back out when it gets older/more mature? The seedling is about 5 inches tall/long & is in a 1 gallon pot right now, so it's deffinitely not round bound or starving for space. I can provide a picture, if needed. Maybe it needs more/less light and/or heat? Please let me know.

A lot of seedlings can be weak, top-heavy things when grown indoors without the wind, rain, and natural conditions to make them strong. Some like to use fans near seedlings just to help to strengthen the seedlings.

I've not grown milk thistle from seed so I can't comment on them specifically.

I buy Milk-Thistle extract. It is good to clean the liver. How do you get seeds for that plant.

No you don't need to thin them unless when the time comes you plan on removing and potting up individual seedlings into their own cup/pot to grow on some more. Otherwise, most of us plant out our seedlings directly into the beds when the seedlings are in the very early true-leaf stages...sometimes in the seed leaf stage (I'll plant out sunflowers in the seed-leaf stage because they are just big enuff to handle!). You can either lift out seedlings with a fork/spoon while (or dump out entire contents and pinch off seedlings as you work)keeping some potting mix around the roots and plant out individual seedlings or use the HOS (Hunk-o-Seedling) method. IMO I only use the HOS method with certain annuals that just perform better crowded, otherwise I separate seedlings and plant out individually or pot up. I don't start potting anything up (if I do) though until May because it's not necessary until then even on things that germinated in late Feb/Mar. because growth is much slower in cool weather. I only pot up stuff I plan to give away or because I want a bigger plant before I plant it out. How many you get depends on how many germinate and how many are injured during the process of removing and planting. I've had some containers literally carpeted by seedlings (those really tiny seed types), but I do a thinning as I plant and may only end up planting out 10 say out of 50 seedlings! I could probably save more but I'm in a hurry when I plant most times and no way would I have the room anyway for so many of one thing! LOL! Big seed or easy seed to handle I like to sow in neat rows in my jugs...that way it makes it much more easy when it comes time to remove and plant..maybe 1/2" between seeds. You have a valid fear, it does get warm here :) I agree with Ellen...I don't worry at all about seedlings freezing. The ones that come up first are very hardy, and in fact, in my garden tend to be the ones that self seed, germinate in the fall and stay green all winter long. Look in your yard, you will be amazed at how many things stay green through ice storms, snow, heat, and back again. What I do is start ventilation quickly. As soon as I start seeing green I start widening the ventilation. I use seed trays with clear (well, they used to be!) plastic lids. I have a few holes in those lids, but since I reuse the containers from year to year, I don't want to make the holes any bigger...so I start sitting the lids on catty corner, with a weight on the lid...chicken wire is a wonderful thing! You are using milk jugs, right? The lids are off already, right? So there should be some pretty good ventilation already. When I get a pretty good germination I take the lid off all together. The chicken wire really comes in handy then! I move the open containers to the middle of my row and let the lids of the other containers hold up the chicken wire. It keeps the birds and squirrels out of their favorite playground. :) When I feel everything is totally germinated and has been growing for a while, I put them in the ground...sometimes this happens before they have their first real leaves. You will get a feel for it after the first couple of containers. I am always amazed at the length of the roots when I start planting. HOS, plunk and run, both of those terms will come in handy when it's time to start planting out those babies :) Lisa (from OK too!)

Since they have been growing outside all along, they do not need the traditional "hardening off". Just be sure to shade newly planted sprouts from sun as you would any newly transplanted plant. When to remove the tops? Depends...if the weather is hot enough to worry about them getting fried the tops need to be removed or more holes have to be cut in them to make for more air flow. Otherwise there is no hurry. They can stay in the covered container until you plant them out or until they get large enough that they are outgrowing the container. Once it looks as if most of the seeds have germinated I remove the tops as soon as possible to make watering easier in the spring. Sometimes I need to replace the tops or cover them with something if there is frost expected. If you are concerned about the sprouts drying out leave the tops on until they have gotten their true leaves or they are larger.

I have a lot of milk thistle (the one with the white variegation) and one or two other kinds that are a little smaller. I don't worry about them until early spring (except in the garden and lawn), and just mow them a couple times in spring when they start to flower but before they set seed. Then at least for my work in thistle fighting I get a considerable amount of compost and mulch for the garden. Fewer of them come up these days than when I first started this, but it's impossible to mow the entire countryside and the wind blown seed tends to get around. I've actually kind of learned to not mind the thistles due to the amount of compost they produce - milk thistle in particular is a great compost crop. Next season I'm putting in some cardoon and artichokes since their cousins seem so happy here. For the lawn I have a manual coring aerator and that's my thistle and dandelion killer. I just go around the lawn and take cores from the center of the rosettes. That leaves cores with the taproot on the surface to die, and the aeration improves the health of the lawn by loosening the soil and improving watcher catching capability and retention, and providing some loose surface soil for overseeded fescue to hide from the birds under and germinate. That can be a lot of cores, but a good job of aeration will take a core ever 6" or so.

This is funny, during WWII we saved the milkweed seeds pods for the military to make life jackets. I know in Michigan and Ohio they are all over the place. We played with the "silk" and love to watch it float thru the air. Maybe the next time instead of buying the seeds some like member of this forum could go out and harvest you lots of seeds :)
