Help!!! My tomato plants are in trouble

Hi, everyone:

About 5 weeks back, for the first time ever in my life, I planted vegetable crop in my home -- four heirloom tomato plants (store-bought, in pots). In the beginning, after I transferred them from pots to my little garden, they were about one and a half feet tall. Now, they are just growing like crazy (right now about 5 ft tall), and there are only 3 tomatos, with one of the four plants without any. Can anyone help me with this? Why aren't tomatos showing up on the plants?

They sound like healthy plants. If you are fertilizing them, ease up on the fertilizer. Fertilizer will give you big green plants - but no fruit. Also what have your temperatures been? Tomatoes only set fruit if day time temps are under 95 and night time temps are above 50.

116 degrees here today! No wonder my tomatoes are not doing well. I prepared "lasagna" beds last fall and set the heirloom tomato plants in them last Feb. Most of my tomato plants don't have any fruit either and some are wilting. Should I shade them or is it too late.

I'm quite disappointed with the lasagna beds...I thought the tomatoes would do better in them. Has anyone else tried them with success?

Everything I see in those pictures says to me "minor nutrient deficiency, particularly insufficient nitrogen, and low light, combining to cause low level of photosynthesis." If you plan to keep those plants indoors much longer, pot them up in a larger container so you can bury the stems a little ... but not so deep that the root wad is at the bottom of the container 'cuz you'll drown the roots. Choose a tall container. Feed the plants after potting up. Use something balance. Those plants need nitrogen and potassium for sure. The main stems are too spindly and hard looking ... need to be stockier, plumper, etc. And then harden the plants off, if they've not already got that treatment, so you can eventually expose them to some real sunlight. They need some sun ... but not all at once ... and some fresh outdoors air. I'm not a real fan of "potting mix" for starting and holding young transplants. Maybe when they get outside in large growing containers. But while they're still in starter cups they should be in starter mix ... nice and fluffy with plenty of aeration for the roots. And I think Miracle-Gro potting mixes are just too damned fancy for tomatoes anyway. You need something soilless and well drained and without all that BS additive moisture retention crud in it. Just my opinions.

Hi The important elements in the fruiting stage are N,K and Ca. Nitrogen wont have any effect on the calcium. Excess P is the most likely culprit as its antagonistic towards Ca. The two elements can react to form calcium phosphate which reduces the Ca availability but it wont adversely affect the P as toms dont use much P and MB has it in abundance. (ie it can afford to lose a lot of P before it becomes an issue) If you can find some good quality, fully soluble potassium sulphate (sulfate of potash) such as Yara SOP or equivalent you can reduce the level of P to something more reasonable. The modified 5 gallon mix would be Masterblend: 13.8g, Calcium nitrate: 27g, Magnesium sulphate: 9.8g, Potassium sulphate: 7.8g. This will give you a good N,P,K,Ca ratio for fruiting with an EC around 2.5 Sticky traps work well for flies, cheap version is strips of polythene painted with blackstrap molasses..once they land on it there`s no escape :)

I would do a complete drain and refill. Alot of products are good for adjusting PH in small doses but if it was over 8 im sure you had to use a bunch. Reccommended reservoir changes every 2 weeks are imparItive to keep the level of each nutrient balanced. Hope they recover quickly, untill you get your RO water ready use a few gallons of purified water from the grocery to help dilute impurities.

Depending on exactly where you are located it may not get down to the mid 30s. Here in the west metro the trees are all pretty much leafed out, which will make it harder for temps to get down to near freezing at ground level. Plus the ground itself has warmed considerably, as my garden has sprouted beans, squash, basil and volunteer tomato plants. There will also be a lot of moisture in the air, which may help keep us here in the metro around 40f overnight Saturday, or upper 30s at the coldest. Personally I am not too worried about it at all. I am a little frustrated as the garden is in suspended animation right now with the cooler temps. As soon as it warms again, things will explode with growth.

Have you used fertilizers high in nitrogen? High N levels usually manifest with lots of plant but little fruit.

Well usualy we would need a litle more information before we can give you a proper diagnosis. But in this case I can plainly see that you are being a little too over zealous. It has only been 35 days since you put your plants in your garden! I challenge any one to say that they can get fruit from tomato plant in just 35 days after planting. You should check out your variety of tomato at a seed supplier's web site and find out what the actual ETI of fruit arrival of your specific plants should be.

I agree with corey, we really need more information. With hundreds of varities available some plants are more bountiful. For example here are some 10ft plants I'm growing with 2lb fruits. I've been fertilizing twice a week and use lots of mulch and watering. Soil,sun,water are needed in the proper balance as the plant grows. You also need pollinators to pollinate the flowers. It would be helpful to post a picture with more information, as there are lots of knowledgable people here to help you.
