Baker Seeds gave me Charentais Melon

They gave me a free pack of Charentais with my order. I have never tried these. I am in West Central Georgia. The temps have been in the low 80's but night temps have been a bit cool still. When can I start them and do they need LOTS of room to run? They sound wonderful. Looking forward to trying it.

Here's what I dug up on GardenGuides.com:

Charentais is a type of true cantaloupe from Europe (what Americans call cantaloupes are actually muskmelons.) Thin, smooth skin with light green stripes, maturing to creamy yellow. Orange flesh is fine-textured, delightfully scented and very sweet. You won't find Charentais in your grocery store - it's thin skin and high sugar content make it fragile to ship when ripe. Enjoy its vine-ripened perfection straight from your garden - one of the sweetest rewards of home gardening.

Days to Maturity: 90
When to Sow Outside: Spring, a week or two after last average frost date, and after nights are no longer cool.
When to Sow Inside: 4 to 6 weeks before last frost. Seedlings don't transplant well, so use paper or peat pots.
Seed Depth: 1/2"
Seed Spacing: 2 seeds per mound
Row Spacing: 4' to 6' between mounds

I bet you'll be able to sow it outside soon.

Unfortunately that doesn't give a good idea of how long the vines of each plant get.

I created a 4' x 8' garden just for melons because of how big they get.

Melon grower. So jealous you had a charentais today. I just picked a ripe arava today and it was good but after the charentais I had the arava did not compare. I really can't wait to have a ripe charentais. Where did you get your mesh bags. May need to invest in some. I think I may have some ripe honey orange in a week or so.

I'm growing them for my 1st time too, but I can tell you what my LA experience with other melons has been 100% in the past -- powdery mildew appears, sweeps through every melon & cuke & squash leaf in the yard, then I race this terminator fungi to reach full vine fruition with hose washings, milk spray, hand-picking the worst leaves and trying to anticipate each plants' needs, so growth never stalls. This gets me great squash, good cukes and the melons are a total crapshoot, but are often crispy critters when the melons are still unripe and unsweet. Every year I vow it will be different. In 2009 I had 60 really nice, tasteless honedew. 2010 I didn't bother, as Spring was so cool. It's probably a fogbelt issue, but I see PM in every yard in the neighborhood on various plants, so it's not going away no matter what I do. If you're in Burbank or Pasadena, you might never notice. If you're in Venice or Palos Verdes, you might be in for a fight. Reposted from the Produce Hunter, because it makes me want to even bother to wage 2 months of battle with asexual spore dispersal: Melon mavens assert that tourists in France have been known to pull to the side of the road, drawn to a halt by the incredible scent of a CHARENTAIS MELON field. We have not witnessed this phenomenon first hand, but can believe it to be true. Charentais melons (also known as Cavaillon melons) are a true cantaloupe, globe shaped, around 3 1/2" in diameter and weighing 2 pounds each. Creamy green to golden beige in color with darker longitudinal ribbings, they have flesh the color of the traditional canteloupe. What makes the Charentais melons so special are their superior eating quality and heady, perfumey aroma. Their flesh is softer than that of a cantaloupe, and their flavor is deeper and sweeter. The French traditionally serve Charentais with prosciutto, but also feature them as an hors d'oeuvre by cutting them in half, scooping out the seeds and filling them with a sweet wine such as Barsac, Marsala, Port or Madiera. I like the fact that they have reviews of the different varieties on their website with the reviewer's city and state. It helps to know what grew well (and tasted good) where. Also, I had wondered about the prairie dresses! I wondered if it was a religious thing. They reminded me of the dresses the women at the Warren Jeff compound wore. Interesting to know it's just a gimmick! I ordered quite a few seed packets from them this year because I had heard good things about them and liked the varieties they offered. Since this is my first time ordering from them, I don't know how they will do yet. I agree that the catalogue is beautiful, but heavy on anti-GMO articles.

Feldon30 how many types of plants do you put in your 4x8. I have one of those I can use.

Well, if they say to leave 4-6' between hills I take it that the melon spreads out pretty well, but that it isn't REALLY rampant. In a 4 X 8' bed I would try planting two hills of 2 plants each. I'd put the hills 3' in from the outer edge, lengthwise and 2' in (down the middle). An option would be to plant a row down the middle of the patch and thin to 4 or five plants, trying to keep them in the middle 4' of the bed. Once you've grown the variety you'll be better able to judge its growing habits. But I suspect this will work.

You should be able to guide the vines back into their 4 X 8 patch if they try to travel outside.

Has anybody tried putting two 8 foot rows in about a foot from the edges of a bed this size, with a trellis for each row? Separate the varieties so you can stop watering each variety as it approaches maturity.

Will it do ok on a sturdy fence?

A sturdy fence is fine. I had some melons on a 4-foot wire fence last year, but you could go higher. We have one of those closed tubes for driving the temporary metal fenceposts (the kind with the metal "wings" at the bottom) into the ground securely.
