Mail Order Source for Mature (Blooming Size) Hellebore?

Hello all.

I have seen pictures of several dark/red/purple hellebore and really want two or three plants for my garden. I have read that hellebore do not bloom until the third or fourth year. I am impatient! Does anyone know where I can order mature, blooming size plants so that I can have flowers next Spring?

You might try Heronswood Nursery (link below).
I have purchased large, blooming sized Hellebores from them during the past several years and have always been very satisfied with quality and service.
I would contact them, to determine if they ship them during this time of the year or wait until fall.
Most other vendors that I'm aware of, sell only small pots by mail-order and any larger sizes are only available during on-site sales.

Thanks for the suggestion, ladywindsurfer. I kept searching after my post and found a place-- Pine Knot Farms. They have great reviews at Dave's Garden. I emailed one of the owners, Judith, and she said that some of their 3 quart and larger plants are blooming size. I will probably place an order soon!

I purchased two sets of Lady strain from Brecks two years ago. Seven of them are blooming this year (of ten). These are seedlings so they have some variability. I think this pic shows a pink and a red--my labels faded over time so I lost track of where I planted each type. I don't think any have been the really blue coloration. With their sale and coupon each one was under $3 each. Brent and Becky bulbs had a seedling mix this year (I don't remember the name)-- 6 for $40 but they are sold out. I was keeping my eye on them to try to get some during their 50% off sale. Two springs ago I purchased lilies and dahlias from B&Bs sale and they were incredibly floriferous the first year. Huge good quality bulbs. Bluestone has some attractive doubles but they are $12-$16 each. I purchased one randoms helleborus from bluestone 3 years ago and it is doing ok. Mail Order Source for _Rhododendron catawbiense_?

There are many forms of R. catawbiense. It varies depending up on where the seed is collected. There are also selected forms which are thought to be better than the typical, or unique. Some sources are: Hank Schannen at Rare Find Nurseries in New Jersey lists 3 varieties of R. catawbiense (Album, Nantucket, Silberrief) at: http://www.rarefindnursery.com/ Girard Nursery in Ohio lists R. catawbiense "Boursault" at: http://www.girardnurseries.com/ Greer Gardens in Oregon lists about R. catatbiense (Album, Boursault, Silber Rief) at: http://www.greergardens.com/ Weston Nurseries in Massachusetts lists about 3 forms of R. catawbiense (Album, Boursault, Grandiflorum) at: http://www.westonnurseries.com/ These are extremely popular and common varieties, so they should be easy to find in the spring at most garden centers.

Xarrah, I have young hellebores that bloom in summer too...I don't know if it's coincidental or not but this is also a cool summer, mild winter climate. Several oriental hybrids began blooming for the first time in June last year; plants I had grown from seed with only a couple of weak fertilizer applications while they were still containerized - no additional fertilizer after planting in the ground. More plants from that same group of seedlings bloomed in winter, more the timing I had expected. I did notice when deadheading spent bloom stalks from the plants that bloomed in winter just a week ago (waited to harvest the seed and the seed is slow to mature here), that two of the plants I was deadheading are again sending up new flower stalks. Year round flowering? I suppose as long as they seem so healthy, they can bloom on their own timing :)

One thing to keep in mind about 'Edgar Degas' not being available until 2018 is that if its patent began when it was introduced in 1997 -- and it lasts 20 years -- that may be why Linda won't be making it available until then, since she can't begin to propagate it without paying royalties until 2017. I don't have much to add, since all the nurseries I've used have been mentioned. I will say that I do have them ranked in terms of whom I ask first when seeking particular roses: Long Ago Roses and Burlington Roses get asked first, because of high quality and very reasonable prices. If they don't have what I want, then I check Rose Petals Nursery or Angel Gardens. These two are also top-notch, but cost including shipping is a bit higher, though not much. These two also tend to specialize in what grows well for them in Florida, so don't expect much in the way of once-blooming old Europeans, though there are a few tucked in. For those cold-hardy oldies, I check High Country Roses. They also have a few hard-to-find species. If there's still something I can't find, I check Rogue Valley Roses or Roses Unlimited. RVR has an amazing selection, but their bands are at the higher end of the spectrum. Also expect about 10% or so to come mislabeled, but my experience is that 1) it's usually nearby alphabetically, so you sometimes end up with something you didn't know you wanted, and 2) if you do need a replacement, emailing some pics and calling the office will get the mistake corrected. RU also has a great selection, but they lean more toward the moderns than does RVR. But they also send hefty 1gal plants. This also means shipping is a bit more if you're not on the east coast, but it's not that bad since I'm in NJ. If I need something with faster impact, I go with RU. If I don't mind nursing something along, I go with RVR. I haven't mentioned Heirloom because I haven't ordered from them since the company changed hands. I will say that they're going more in the direction of modern roses, and the few remaining oldies I can easily find elsewhere. So it's not that I ever had a problem with their roses -- it's just that there isn't as much that they have which catches my eye. But I wouldn't hesitate to order from them should that change. :-) ~Christopher

Have never purchased any Helleborus from PKF. None of their listings were that impressive to me.
As a collector, for about 25 years, I am only interested in very unique colors and color combinations. Yellows, slate, blues and near black are my current interest.

I have received numerous hellebores in all of the above colors and more from PKF, and some have actually been shipped while in bloom. As you probably are aware, other than tissue cultured plants, which at this point usually will not be available in blooming sizes, it's pretty much a necessity to choose plants while they're in bloom if you want very specific colors, patterns, etc. The Tylers at Pine Knot have selected plants for me in the past based on pics I've sent them, etc., but that, of course, has to be done during the bloom season.

Its nice to hear from someone else that has ordered from PKF. Judith was clear about which plants and sizes she could guarantee colors. I ordered a 6 quart "Pine Knot Select Darkest" and one 3 quart each of "Red Lady" and "Blue Lady". They should arrive next week!

I've heard good about both Heronswood and Pine Knot, and I'm sure you'd be happy with either. I'm certianly pleased with the plants I purchased from each. I have also grown many plants from Pine Knott seed, and it's fun but does require patience. Out of a batch of 50 seeds I have the usual whites and pinks, but also yellow, red, almost black, purple,double, anemone, picotee, spotted and veined and solid colored.... I was amazed at the variety and the quality.
